I’m moving to Baltimore around May and have been looking around. Where I currently live I’m paying $1000 a month for a 3 bedroom house and would prefer to find a row home in Baltimore but am not opposed to other options. I know I’m probably not going to find anything for that price and am trying to cap out at 2k as I’ll be by myself. I’m in Baltimore enough to know a bit but what areas should I look out for, what kind of places should I steer away from. I’ve seen some row homes come up in my price range with some utilities included but moving an hour away id like to go in a little less blind

Do you know where you’ll be working, and if so, do you value being close to where you work? That might help narrow down the suggestions. Also, what do you prioritize in a neighborhood? Safety? Diversity? Nightlife? Easy/quick access to major thoroughfares? I think every neighborhood that will probably be suggested here has strengths and weaknesses in all those areas, so which is most important to you?

Safety and nightlife/walkability is important to me. I have not secured my job as I’m coming out of electrician school in West Virginia and plan to probably join the Maryland union. I can commute to work but want to be able to walk to grab food and such

I don’t know your age, but Federal Hill has good safety/walkability and lots of nightlife options, although it definitely caters to a younger crowd (early/mid 20s). Statistically, I believe Locust Point is the “safest” neighborhood in Baltimore, a little more residential, and has a quieter nightlife scene but also very close (walkable) to Federal Hill. Fells Point, Canton, Hampden, Remington, Charles Village, and Mt. Vernon might also fit what you’re looking for in terms of the safety/nightlife combo. I think the areas near the water (LP, Fed Hill, Fells, Canton) do tend to be a bit pricier, although it sounds like from your budget you’d definitely still be able to find options within that range. Especially if you consider splitting a place with roommates.

I work in the heart of the fed hill nightlife, so I'm just gonna call you out on that. The more clublike bars are ratchet as all hell, but the further you get into fed, and get into the smaller bars, the more chill it gets.

What’s your favorite bar? I walk by Idle Time a lot and that seems really chill.

Idle hours is fantastic, I've heard some good things about Mother's but I haven't checked it out, Pub Dog on Cross is nice because it's very much not a nightclub bar, but more of a pub.

Riverside is also worth checking out.

Idle hours, yes. For some reason I see the sign like every day and still call it the wrong thing 🤦🏼‍♀️

Yes I was referring more to the Cross St/Charles St nightlife area, which depending on one’s individual taste, age, preferences, etc., could be appealing or unappealing. Did not mean to imply Federal Hill is “only” that scene though, so apologies if that’s what came through in my original post.

>Cross St/Charles St nightlife area,

The area that's had three shootings in the past month, and two days ago a brawl where one woman beat another woman to the ground, lifted her head up by the hair, and kept punching her?

Cause that's the area I work in, and I saw that incident first hand two days ago.

What came through was that the fed hill club scene is not one I'd really recommend to anyone. Hampden and Canton are much better to actually enjoy a night out and not have to worry about some drunk asshole starting something.

Depends on your taste in lifestyle, bu Hampden, Federal Hill, Fells Point, are all nice and all different...

Places like Canton, Fells Point and Fed Hill that are walkable and have night life, generally don’t have good parking situations. These neighborhoods work best if you don’t own a car. If you’re planning on driving to a job, look at neighborhoods just outside of them, however, the nightlife will be a bit further away and you’ll probably want to look at buying a bike or renting/buying e-scooter. We’re working on improving public transit, but it’s a slow process. If you do want to own a car and live in Baltimore and your job ends up being south of the tunnels, then look south of the tunnel and visa-versa if north. This avoids the biggest bottleneck of the highways and saves you some money since you don’t necessarily need an ezpass if you don’t go through the tunnels often.

I own 2 cars actually and was going to look at a parking garage situation unless I found a row house with a spot or 2 in the back

I just moved out of a spot that cost me $2k it was two bedrooms and had two parking spots in a covered secure garage. Message me for the info and I can put you in touch with the landlord

At the very least you’ll find in a neighborhood like canton or fed or fells, you’ll park your car on Friday night and rarely move it until Monday morning. Most places on the weekend you’ll walk to (or scoot or bike) and giving up your parking spot is a risky proposition on the weekend. Owning two cars for one person isn’t really conducive to city living in a lot of Baltimore tbh. You may want to see if you can leave one car at a relatives or something if it’s just an occasional drive or collectible vehicle. We have a 48 hour rule in Baltimore city, where your car must move every 48 hours or it can be ticketed, so parking a seldom used vehicle on the street for storage will likely end up with tickets.

I’m almost certain I can find a residential/commercial electrician job in the city, and I want to be able to live close enough to bike or walk to a bar and some stores

Hampden got some rowhomes for sale on Falls Rd right now. Saw one or two on Falls Rd and some across the neighborhood.
