You aren't getting any money from that guy. Hope you got his license plate number or something.

I got his plate info but honestly I’m kinda scared I am always around the area where he crashed onto me. I don’t want to run into him and get into trouble. Baltimore is rough place? So do I just call the cops? Like how would it work at this point ?

if there was damage to your car, you should always call the police to get a record of the incident, regardless of insurance. especially in baltimore.

You can call the police, but they won’t record it or issue citations unless someone is injured; I know from experience when someone hit me and I called them for a record for my insurance company.

Correct. It's not exclusive to Bmore—police will not generally show up in Maryland unless there's an injury.

With bodycams shouldn't those be rolling in that instance?

You could file a claim with your own insurance company with your uninsured motorist coverage.

I had a fender bender with a driver and we both called the cops multiple times. We waited two hours and they never showed. We finally left when they told us if no one was hurt they weren't going to bother. So even if you did call there's no guarantee anyone would come.

He’s not gonna do shit he’s just trying to take advantage of your fear. Report his ass….

Keep head on a swivel for a bit after and go back to baseline as things turn out ok

Apart from the moral principle, I'm beginning to lose sight of what the point is of having auto insurance if not having it isn't punished whatsoever.

  1. everyone should get a dashcam if you don't have one.
  2. if you get in an accident, make sure to take pictures or video of everything. their plate, both cars, them, and especially their ID. if they promise to pay, then they should have no problem giving your their ID.

when I get in an accident, I step out of the car with my phone held as if I'm not doing anything but the video is rolling the whole time.

You may be able to file a report online

Info: has he actually contacted you via text at all since you gave the number? You can file a report of the accident online if you need it for insurance.

Samthevalley t1_it5xua9 wrote

Yea I texted him and he texted me back but not payment! Okay I’ll do that..Thank is

I would file a report either way so that you have it on record. You can decide if you want to include his info or not in the police report. Then report it to your insurance, if you want to, right away. Or, if you think he's legit & will pay you, get an estimate for the repairs & ask for the money up front. Tell him if he doesn't, you'll need to file a police report so your insurance will pay the damages. You can decide if you want to include his info or not in your report to either the police or your insurance.

todareistobmore t1_it61jt1 wrote

Payment for what? Do you have a repair estimate? Is this something that would be worth reporting to your insurance, or is it something you can/would drive around on?

Figure out what you'd do (and what it would cost) if you're on your own, and that'll help figure out whether it's worth chasing this guy? Chances are the dude doesn't have thousands of dollars set aside for this.

Find car, take plates. Report him for driving around without insurance.

First, this has nothing to do with Baltimore being scary- fender benders literally happen everywhere.

Second, did you contact your insurance? You should be covered for uninsured motorists. Let your insurance pay you and let them chase after this person for the money if they want to get reimbursed.

Third, never trust anyone. Particularly someone who has recently threatened you. Those don't tend to be the kinds of people who abide oral contracts. If you aren't looking to get the police involved at this point just let insurance sort it out. The odds this person is acting in good faith is extremely low.
