In hospitals they use that reddish stuff (bedadectine? I definitely butchered that) because it kills bacteria but doesn't work in the same way as rubbing alcohol, which if used on a healing wound for a week or more (when changing bandages) will slow down healing and could even cause the wound to become infected from staying open longer and constantly having the scab rubbed off and doused in alcohol over and over.
