He heads down to purchase pie ingredients and manages to head into the village on the day an insurgency from the peasants arrises as they revolt against the king, who decides to launch his kingsguard against the villagers.
This is really good, tysm for the suggestion!!
His strict master wants him to stick to the recipe while he wants to experiment.
One of the ingredients is not available in the local market so he must go to a larger village across the river owned by another feudal lord who is said to have introduced strange laws on his lands.
He finds some mystery meat and decides to use it for his pie. The local priest has gone missing.

Every time he tries to buy an ingredient it suddenly disappears/is sold out. Unbeknownst to him, a rat is also looking to bake a pie and is taking everything he needs.
Where will he find the two dozen blackbirds?
In a quest to bake his grandmother's sought after "berry berry" pie; hijinks shortly ensue as a simple grocery run leads him afoul of adventures, guards, and even friends and family.
Simplest way to complicate things would be to have him run afoul of a cutpurse working the crowd. Hard to buy ingredients without money.
He doesn't know how to bake a pie. His mother always did it and she died of the plague nearly a year ago. But it's his little sister's birthday and their mother always made a blueberry pie for her each year.
Conflict: He has to convince the town baker to teach him, but he's not interested in a new apprentice.
Maybe it’s for a competition. Who can make the best hand made pie for the least amount of money? Or something like that. Maybe the best tasting if that’s easier. It could be timed if that makes it easier to write as short story with. Like, he can only spend so much time shopping before he needs to get back to actually bake the pie on time.
Or since the prompt is more about gathering the ingredients than baking the pie, it could be for a special person. So he takes great care on picking the eggs and apples (or whatever filling) that will make the pie because quality matters in things involving love/respect lol (not in a bad way though, I mean, when I’m making something for someone as a gift because I like them, I want it to be perfect)
