I think the unions should be pressuring all union shops to increase staffing instead of wage increases. There is nothing worse than working in a profession you love but grow to hate because you are forced to do the work of two or three people and ridiculous shifts that will eventually effect your well being. Most direct care positions start out as dream jobs because what you do makes a difference in people's lives. Eventually the corporate people look for ways to increase profit and staffing is the first thing that takes a hit. A little at a time your job becomes more difficult, you work harder but aren't compensated for it. Profits rise and corporate starts cutting more staff and mandating longer shifts. People quit and the job becomes a nightmare. Complaints never go further up than middle management and the union local. Things keep getting worse, so you quit and it's the end of a career because every similar place of employment is exactly like the one you just left. Things are going to get much, much worse if this doesn't change.

One big point the liability of your license and if you mess up ala Vanderbilt nurse… I still think she should have lost her license……. But criminal charges……… also begging the question if the hospital weren’t such AH about staffing would she have even Been in this situation.
I tell to outsiders of nursing….. if you work say construction and it’s pre COVID… does one trade do the jobs of three other trades with one or two people on a Job site…. No because it’s unsafe inefficient and not cost effective… and nothing gets done…. Then call backs happen (hey Bob the plumber/CNA your pipes are leaking).. hey roofer/guy who can’t focus on the roof he built which now less because the phone keeps ringing with patient families since god for bid they hire a 24/7 nurse case manager act as a liaison so the staff nurse can do their job.
And finally let’s get rid of the old school foreman on the IV team… who fix things and get things done… oh well… let’s hire a bunch of muppet 20 year old new grads who will just give up and play on their phones all shift

I have a family member, a retired RN in Florida who worked for Humana, Humana is big down south they're every where. Way before the pandemic (1990s) Humana cut staffing and this resulted in RNs pulling one 24 hr shift a week and a 12. When she told me this I thought it was a joke, Humana and others got away with it then, don't know how it is now. This is not limited to the medical profession, all employers will push things as far as they can. I once worked for a large non profit that did a lot of shady things and we were told not to discuss any of these things with our coworkers or anyone outside of the workplace. We all had to sign NDAs and anytime there were rumors going around you knew they were true because we'd get memos reminding us not to talk about one thing or another. I think the most telling thing about this organization was that all of the board members were attorneys. One of the open secrets was this organization hired a lot of illegals who they treated badly. One day I decided I'd had enough and left. This by the way is not an exception regarding non profits any one of them that receives government money is suspect.

I get the 20 year olds on their phones thing, that's everywhere now. Went through a drive through, paid at one window and pulled up to the next and this young girl is having an animated conversation with her back to me. She turned and saw me and gestured to wait a minute and continued to talk so I hit the horn. She turns around and does an eye roll and shoves my order through the window without putting the phone down or even looking at me. My order was wrong but of course I wasn't at the window so I parked and went inside and asked to speak to the manager who personally fixed my order. I don't know what happened to window girl but probably nothing.
