I believe that IT should provide 2 primary functions:

  • Provide service and value to enable the business.
  • Protect the business by effectively reducing risk.

Security is a very important part of a business' IT strategy. That is my motivation for taking the CISSP.

What was your preparation? I've got Meyer's Security+ book, and did the Cybersecurity certificate at QCC, I've got a non-related bachelors degree, and my work experience is IT-adjacent. Are you working in the industry now?

I watched videos of Messer and then used Messer’s and Dion’s test papers and hung out in the community discord. The discord part was fun because people were so helpful with some concepts and group study was indeed fun. I’m working as a network engineer currently, can’t still transition to security.

Fight on brother. How long would you say it took for you to feel ready, from start of prep to scheduling and passing your exam?

It took me around 2 months but I was learning like 6 hours a day. I read somewhere that if I don’t schedule the exam, I won’t feel ready. So went ahead and scheduled for 2 months and made my way up there.

I’m taking a class that has prep for Security+ and I’m relatively new to the area so I wouldn’t mind making friends. I’m currently aiming for an undergraduate in Cybersecurity, which I know isn’t necessary, but I want to conduct research in the future.

Currently in classes for my CompTiA+ as well as aws and a few other things.

Also have some certs for Microsoft products as well as Adobe indesign, illustrator, and photoshop.

I've worked in a NOC/SOC in non-technical role, and decided I wanted join the cool kids on the other side of the room (they were a tight knit group, always went to lunch together and hung out outside of work). Also was laid off during COVID, and cybersec is job security, you don't have to worry about your position being offshored to a low cost center like Bangalore, due to the nature of the work most security roles require you to be onshore or legal resident for compliance purposes.
