There is some interesting vertical banding of populations east of the I-5 corridor, I wonder if this is an artifact or something else to explain the unusual distribution.

You can also see it in the Olympics. It's gotta be something to do with the data for people living on federal lands.

It is very much not. There is basically no checkerboarding outside the foothills of the Cascades.
