Do we really? He had some funny press conferences but he also did lots of shitty things.

Yeah I think it's a bit off to just skim over all of his shitty conspiracy theories just because he was a good football coach.

My roommate at the time told me that even if they convicted OJ Simpson of murder that he should be acquitted due to his--and I shit you not-- "contributions to Football."

Shitty, yes; surprising? Not anymore.

Was he that good while in Washington?

Turned wazzu from a perennial loser to having high win totals every year. They beat Oregon 4 or 5 years in a row with him at the helm and often lead the nation in passing. Could never figure out UW though lol.

His legacy in the sport is very far-reaching and goes well beyond wsu though. Father of the air raid offense we see all over college football today, and tons of current nfl/college coaches mentored under him

The only thing I really disliked about leach was the couple of times he threw players under the bus during press conferences and such. I think the guy just had no social awareness around things like that; otherwise he had a tremendous impact on football and the guy was mad funny.

I'm just going to disagree with this. The man said and did shitty things. I'm not a fan.

Mike Leach was controversial, no doubt. He had his way of doing things, and was stubborn about it. Honestly, I think a lot of people I know could learn about having a backbone from him.

Gwtheyrn t1_j09lyrd wrote

It's not backbone. It's a man deciding that the rules that apply to everyone else shouldn't apply to him.

Hecho_en_Shawano t1_j08yn39 wrote

Being a conspiracy theory believer/promoter is not being controversial…it’s being ignorant. Good riddance

Mike Leach was a horrible person - we really don't need any more people like him, even if they are really good football coaches.

amb56 t1_j0an3rl wrote

How so? I follow college ball pretty closely and never heard of him doing anything horrible. Seemed like a funny dude with no filter in his press conferences

He was a conspiracy theorist who on multiple occasions tweeted doctored video of Obama that were really racist. He was an avid Trump supporter who made his black players identify pictures of Donald Trump in practice. When he went to MSU He made a bunch of racist tweets - at one point he had to apologize to his own players because they said they wouldn't play until he did because he tweeted some really fucked up imagery of a noose with a not-so-thinly veiled message about hanging a black man.

He was just a fucking piece of shit, and no one should mourn a bigot.

No. The world is better off without ignorant assholes like him. Stop celebrating stupidity

Rock-it1 t1_j0bolxt wrote

First you should stop celebrating the loss of human life.

Hecho_en_Shawano t1_j0caj2n wrote

I didn’t celebrate it, but I’m also going feel bad out pretend he wasn’t who he was.

And second??

1

Rock-it1 t1_j0ce0ph wrote

No second. Before asking someone to stop celebrating a decent man who made some mistakes, you you stop celebrating the fact that he no longer lives. Or would you like for the entirety of everyone's lives, including your own, to only be judged by their worst, stupidest moments?

Hecho_en_Shawano t1_j0cg2er wrote

His being was a long stupid moment. My family has been destroyed by MAGA bullshit. I have no tolerance for the people that played any part in growing that movement. And even less for those who used their influence to push nonsense around Covid that got people killed.

Old-AF t1_j09uwce wrote

Is “character” the word we’re using for racist conspiracy theorists who supported an Insurrectionist? I’m perfectly fine with this coach not being here anymore. I hope his family is better than him, but I’m not holding my breath.

Jesus people are really sticking their claws into Leach here. He had a positive impact on tons of people and I respect the guy, even if he believes conspiracy theories. The guy wasn’t no nick rolovich

Its insane how much hate is here. Leach was a great person. His theories may have been batshit, but he was still a good guy. Helluva coach, helluva guy.

Really an interesting dude, got the chance to meet him once while I was waiting tables, surprisingly quiet at least at that moment compared to the rest of his staff. Was a ton of fun being at WSU while he coached.

Turns out being good at shit and kind of funny absolves all sins.
