I'm confused about the waiting week concept. The website says the first week is unpaid, but if the minimum claim for leave is 8 hours, wouldn't you not even get paid for taking a week or less of leave?

You get paid for the week, it just takes an extra week to get rolling at the start.

Correct, but I believe there are exceptions for birth. I am not a pro however

There are a couple of exceptions around parental/maternity leave that are not subject to the week waiting period. But in general you are correct that if you are taking only a week of medical leave you would not use PFML. There is an assumption that sick leave is available.

Payment is always for the previous week. Unemployment works the same way.

You can get paid for only taking a day or two off in a week. I used the leave on a part-time basis after I had my son. I was able to get paid for the two days I was off on leave, and I worked three days. Each week you submit a claim of how much you worked in that week (they get information from your employer about how much you typically work in a week), and you get paid for the time off that you took. Since I was using it as family leave, I was able to use it throughout the first year of my son's life. I don't know if you have the option to extend it that long for medical leave.

Wow that is good to know! With my son in 2020 I was a student and working on a yearlong contract so I couldn't take time off (or I could and graduate late). I think I could have figured out a part-time thing and gotten paid a little. Maybe next time ha
