It is a good thing. Sometimes extreme emotion can make people cry, even if it's a good feeling.

I've cried tears of joy for getting a statistically significant result in a months long experiment. If I was in conversation conservation, I too would be sobbing out of relief that the intervention worked.

There are multiple forms of crying. It's emotional release. It can be a burst into tears, it can be ugly sobbing, it can be a single tear running down your cheek and each and every one of these ways is normal and legitimate.

Forgot to mention, the reasoning can be whatever, too. As I said, emotional release. Could be joy, anger, fear, frustration, empathy. Some people force themselves to contain it, others don't or can't. Some will not feel the urge at all. All valid. I've shed a few happy tears myself in my time, feels really good, actually.

“Burst into tears” is a common phrase/hyperbole here in Aus, just in case it’s not common elsewhere. Just means cried, could have been a few tears while cheering or full out sobbing, it’s a wide spectrum.

Ah, thanks for that. I was imagining that they were freaking the animals out loudly sobbing. Which is fine if they did need a big cry but it just didn’t ring true for some reason. It would probably be a more reserved happy cry if you are relieved for the animal.

Hmmm yeah. But in the US (at least my area) it does actually meaning suddenly begin sobbing. Not just a tear or two like it apparently can be used in AUS.
