I’d imagine this is not particularly uplifting for the cows.

Why is this uplifting?

I guess there are people who are passionate about their farm animals, and them getting home safely makes them feel good.

Probably because Canada is not the time of place where domestic animals thrive in the wild.

I wouldn't say cattle really thrives in domestication either though.

I heard pigs do pretty well when they escape. They even grow tusks over a few generations.

In Quebec? They wouldn't survive the winter.

I don’t know about that. I’ve seen range cattle standing out in the open with snow on their back at -40 degrees. Cows are tough!

How are they fugitives? What law did they break, and what law enforcement agency were they running from?

Anyhow, glad they're home. Unless of course your plan is to kill them and eat them. In which case, I know why they were on the run.

David Duchovny has a novel called "Holy Cow" about exactly this scenario. I wonder if they read it and took the idea seriously.

Well, the rain exploded with a mighty crash

As we fell into the sun

And the first cow said to the second one there

"I hope you're having fun"

Cows on the run, cows on the run

And Farmer Fran and sailor Sam

Were searching everyone

For the cows on the run, cows on the run

For the cows on the run, cows on the run

It was written by a knight and his wife.

It is rather good, innit?

Seriously, I ripped musical royalty here. It's Band on the Run, by Paul McCartney and Wings. If you've never listened to it, give it a go, it's 5 minutes, but there's three separate sections.
