I bet the pet sitter really appreciated having their name in the article. Like, who is gonna leave a dog with them now?
What the owner did - going into the icy pond - was foolish, but I bet a lot of pet owners would at least try to do the same thing.

Foolish just due to the danger to himself?
There's no chance in hell I'd ever be able to live with myself if I didn't go in after my dog. And I know on paper that's the wrong move...but I personally probably wouldn't last more than a month if I just watched as my dog drowned and didn't do anything I could to save her...I'd be racked with overwhelming guilt.

That’s not uplifting, that’s pure stupidity.
Stay on shore and call 911. They don’t want to rescue you and recover your pet. They’ll just come rescue the dog.

He knew what he was doing, being a navy seal water coach. He has to know how long a person can stay in icy cold waters, water that wasn’t moving either, so there was less chance of him being pulled under.

Assuming they make it in time...if it's looking dire I'm diving in...I know it's the wrong call, but fuck it.

I know they have 120 seconds max to go from bells to truck rolling, but average less than that. Plus a few minutes travel time. So from making the call to professionals arriving on scene (that are trained in ice rescue and can do it safely) in about 5 minutes.
I’d take the sure bet over the uncertainty of me being able to climb back onto the ice should I fall in.
On the other hand, you could just control your leashed dog and not put yourself in such a situation.

wow Wow - so happy for Moose, Kellie and Louis Nicolao & Nicolina Converso and everyone that had a part in the rescue

Atta boy!!! My buddy once had to jump into a freezing river in Oregon after his dog decided to chase a winter kite boarder.

If he wasn't the USNA Water Polo coach I think this might have had a very different ending. I know someone on the rescue dive squad of the Chicago Fire Dept. He has a lot of sad stories that start with someone chasing their dog out onto frozen bodies of water.
