It's not hard to be a hero, you just have to do what's right.

Glad to see the news agencies picking up her story.

The universe shows it’s true face when it asks for help, we show ours, by how we respond.

Four or five moments, that’s all it takes. To be a hero. Everyone thinks it’s a full-time job. Wake up a hero. Brush your teeth a hero. Go to work a hero. Not true. Over a lifetime, there are only 4 or 5 moments that really matter. Moments when you’re offered a choice. To make a sacrifice, conquer a flaw, save a friend… spare an enemy. In these moments, everything else falls away

Here we have an excellent example of the human spirit of bravery and kindness. She is my hero too. She inspired me to be my best.

A much needed feel good story. Awesome that this nice lady was able to rally other good Samaritans around the town to help save this man’s life. Very resourceful and quick thinking.

Am I reading that they had to fundraise $50k for his medical treatment? What a country…

As uplifting as it is that they all helped him. It saddens me to see that with forty years under the same employer, they will help with a fundraiser for your medical bills.

charleswj t1_j20fpbz wrote

You should look at who his employer is before you assume they have an extra $50k just sitting around

Right now her husband is rather miffed that his wife is the only hero in the story.

It not like he was not helping at all....

rebelkitty t1_j204cf7 wrote

I assume her partner just didn't want to be interviewed. Not everyone wants their face all over the media.

8

GoodmanSimon t1_j205iog wrote

Maybe, but the headline is making her sound like the one and only hero.

What she did was amazing, no doubt, but her partner was just as heroic and amazing.

He could have easily been mentioned in the headline, it would have been less misleading.

rebelkitty t1_j209qfn wrote

Her boyfriend could have a million good reasons to want to stay out of the press. He could work in a sensitive job, he could be undocumented, he could be dodging an ex, or he could owe someone money. Or maybe they aren't officially "together" yet, or maybe he's just a very private person!

In the CNN interview I just watched, Sha'Kyra was careful to say simply, "I'm so grateful my family was with me." It seems very much like she's protecting him, not stealing his glory.

GoodmanSimon t1_j22aaqw wrote

You, and obviously others, are misunderstanding my comment.

I never said she did anything wrong.

I am just saying the headline is misleading.

It doesn't matter if he wants to remain anonymous or not, the headline should have simply been more general.

Saying that the couple was heroic rather than just the woman.

Anyways, we are going around I circle. Obviously the point was missed here.

The article mentions he is developmentally disabled and in a group home setting. The circumstances of that group home are not clear, but I'd probably be looking to blame the person in charge there. But sure. Yeah, dunk on that dude. Good for you.

In keeping with the spirit of the subreddit, maybe we just celebrate that some people took their time to help out someone who perhaps didn't have the mental capacity to understand the weather the same way you did.

jeswesky t1_j1z8ydk wrote

With some group homes, access isn't restricted. Residents are free to come and go within the rules of the house and don't need to check in with anyone. They can usually manage their day to day tasks without an issue. Problems just arise when things outside of the norm happen, like storms and changes in work schedules. There is also a good chance with the storm the staff was overworked as people may not have been able to leave since replacement staff may not have been able to make it in.

SlabofPork t1_j1z9hnh wrote

Honestly had no idea how these things work. Thanks for the insight!

rebelkitty t1_j20505x wrote

I just saw an interview with his sister. He left the group home without permission and tried to walk to work. He was trying to keep to his routine, not understanding that everyone was supposed to stay inside, or even that the theatre he worked at was closed (though apparently he'd been told). It doesn't sound like anyone is really to blame here.

1

SlabofPork t1_j2065v4 wrote

Yeah, I mean, as /u/jeswesky mentioned, there's a good chance the staff that was there was overworked or without backup once the storm really got going. So "blame" for me is a strong word, and not what I really want to imply. It's an accident, and sure, someone made a mistake, but it is most likely a whole slew of factors that allowed this to happen.

We're just lucky that someone said "I better help that poor guy out," and not, "it's lake effect, bro. Stay inside."

3

charleswj t1_j20oxht wrote

Didn't ever occur to you that that person didn't realize he was disabled? It's not like it's prominently mentioned in the article
