Reddit makes it seem like it's a magical, progressive place that the world should strive to be like.

Progress is progress. You have Indonesia just bringing up dark clouds our any sex outside marriage, contraceptives, homosexuality etc. And Iran doing away with moral police. A lot many countries don't have equal laws and ban on death penalties. These small victories need to be celebrated iMHO.
