That’s kind of the real takeaway. Circus animals aren’t that impressive if they’re not real animals and if they are, they’re more than likely abused. Conclusion: we have a lot cooler shit than animal based circus acts for entertainment, and we should move on from it.

I interpreted that as them saying that literally and was trying to add the perspective that no, some people would in fact want to see that. I wasn't trying to be malicious or a jerk. I have autism. They're really going to be in trouble when someone asks the computer to create a circus elephant capable of defeating Commander Data.

I've been to a few. They still have really impressive feats of human skill. The one that had animals in it had the animals very rarely and seemed to be taking better care of them (I think some horses trotted in a coordinated pattern and an elephant came holding/wearing a banner, then left).

I'd be interested in seeing how they handle holograms. Circuses seem to try to push visuals and entertainment. They might come up with some really creative new ways to show off.

Circuses used to display "human freaks," people with all kinds of physical deformities. As public sensitivities changed, circuses did away with those acts and instead focused on artistic acts and animal training.

It seems like doing away with animal acts as the public is is more aware and concerned about animal welfare just seems like the next logical step. I don't see how this would necessarily mean the end of circuses, or why we should no longer call it "the circus."

I think I went to one in the second grade? I'm 33 now so, math. I haven't even seen a circus since then and I've lived from Florida clear to Hawaii and places in between. They freak me out, the whole scenario around the circus makes the entire idea feel icky.

I'm not saying you have to like it. But why are you trying to say that no one would like it? You don't speak for everyone. Just say you don't like it. You don't have to try to express it as some sort of universal truth that it's innately unsatisfying. What if you're the type of person to appreciate the technological work that went into it? What if that is more than enough for you, and you actually don't find it unsatisfying?

As long as the holograms of the animals are captured ethically then it's very different. The issue with animals performing at the circuss is the well-being of the animals. The issue with showing people with deformities or other extreme physiology is exploitation. Our society has no issue with the exploitation of animals, as long as they are well treated in that exploitation.

The circus is better now than it's ever been.

if critical role collaborated with broadway or some shit to make a literal LARP show with giant hologram monsters i would throw ALL of my money at it.

I went to one about 8 years ago when my then-girlfriend’s mom got us tickets. It was a Ringling Brothers circus. I had never gone to one and didn’t know what to expect.

The animals were seldom used. There certainly was a bit where someone did gymnastics on top of an elephant which looked cool. They also brought out a Tiger and did some trick where the tiger was bouncing a ball on its head back to the handler kind of like they were playing catch. From cartoons and such I had expected to see some tiger jumping through a flaming hoop, and a ringmaster holding a chair and cracking a whip at a big lion, but there was none of that.

Mostly it was gymnastic stuff, like these guys riding these big “hamster wheels” and jumping on top of them, and someone getting shot out of a cannon, and some rope swinging stuff. I liked all that.

Maybe 8 years ago was a long time and things have changed, but even back then the animal use was minimal. I hope circuses don’t go away, as it was a lot of fun just watching the people do tricks.

Imagine the insane tricks you can let a holographic elephant do, stand on its trunk whilst juggling skippy balls on his feet. Accompanied by a pack of zebras in unicycles playing various musical instruments. And then a lion comes and sings the national anthem of the country the circus is in at that moment.
