It used to work in England too, kids who's parents are on social benefits still get free school meals. Many more people, who aren't on social benefits, are struggling these days so free school meals for all would be the best solution.

Sadiq Kahn is the Labour Mayor of London and has a much more socialist outlook than the sitting Tory government, who decides for most of the rest of the country.

Are you saying basic human rights shouldn’t be means tested!?

As if children should receive some sort of “universal basic ingestible”, just because they’re going to an institution specifically designed to maximise their future economic contribution to society!?

And what exactly the hell do you think you’re going to get out of doing all that? Some sort of generation of well educated, healthy and financially stable, youth, far less likely to have mental or preventable physical health issues, who don’t need to fall into a debasing repetitive cycle of criminal activity in order just to survive!?

Do you have any idea how much a scheme like this would cost the taxpayers? Cents! Maybe even tens of cents per taxpayer!! Every year!!!

Outrageous! Deplorable! Etc.

Next thing you’re going to tell me you think education should be free!! 😂🤣🤢

It's an election year bribe and he doesn't have the money to fund it.

I was thinking the same thing. Why only a year?

Thank god it's only the kids in London that need help with school meals. The rest of the country is so fortunate. /s

I'm choosing to take this as a good play from Kahn to get it in place as a "small" thing for a year but knowing that it'll be harder to take away in a year's time at which point who knows - perhaps it will be rolled out further.

I’m hoping this is a chance to demonstrate that this can kind of program can be a net gain, even from a financial perspective.

I'm pretty sure the US's child tax credit program thing had net gains inreducing child poverty, but that got stripped away, so I worry that won't be enough... ~Cherri

Celebrate it, it is about to come into an election mandate as a result of its (hopeful) success.

Being Swedish, I'm still in shock finding out this is not the norm in industrialised countries already. Been legally mandated here since 97.

We have this implemented in Russia. Free breakfast, lunch and the afternoon tea with sweets/pastry for elementary kids. And very cheap meals for everyone else. Yeah, it was the same in the USSR, but not in the early days of RF. They only returned that policy a couple of years ago. You don't have to be a first-world country, you don't even need successful economy to take care of your kids. Because who else will? Kids are more important than anything.

Oh ho ho! The wealthiest county on Earth just ended the additional food funding for children in the middle of a housing crisis, logistics crisis, inflation crisis, endemic crisis, and healthcare collapse.

Western World leaders do not care about the poor in the slightest. Unless they feel like guillotines are about to start rolling down the streets.

Better title, one of the richest cities in one of the richest countries will not force children to pay to not go hungry this year, but will resume this barbaric practice next year. Food is a basic human right, they are not offering they are merely not taking away a human need in exchange for cash.
