If you close one eye your brain ignores the signal from the closed eye. That is what people who are completely blind see, nothing.

But you can still see light through the eyelid, meaning a closed eye without light is seeing black, not nothing… or maybe I’m just an idiot

Try putting any object of any color up to your face and cover your eye, it still works

Actually "seeing nothing" is quite rare. Most legally blind people have some vision left. Many see rough shapes, and bigger patches of light and dark. Even pretty far down that scale when you would say they see "nothing", the very most people still have a sensation of "light" and "dark".
