Cold water tastes better because it usually indicates it's fresh out of the ground while warm water is usually stale and unsafe.

I meant like a cold fast flowing mountain river or a fresh spring. Maybe even a melting glacier.

And by stale I'm thinking of a lake with no circulation, or anything similar. (no fresh water coming in, no water going out) also warm water is more likely to hold harmful bacteria and such.

Side note: water temperature preference is a culture thing. In some cultures, people prefer warm water.

This is actually false. In my Food and Beverage college classes we learned that restaurants will serve lower quality drinks super cold or super hot bc that masks some of the taste. ie: the highest quality sake a Japanese restaurant is going to be served luke warm for the fullest flavor, while the cheapest sake is going to be served super hot so you don’t notice the lower quality in the taste.
