In Hinduism offering food to the gods you give them the first bite. After someone has taken an bite already the food is deemed unclean.

People have been disgusted with each other long before we discovered germs.
In a way double dipping was actually a survival tactic. Get someone to taste your food for poison before you take a bite.

Germ theory started in the nineteenth century once microscopes became available and had good enough lenses to see thing that small.
