Maybe I'm too pessimistic but at this point I'm convinced the machines aren't going to work for us so much as be used to make us work more.

You're thinking of the "singularity" AI/AGI. Robotaxi will happen way before that. Driving a car safely is machine vision and some complex predictive logic, but its doesn't need genius level AI. It will probably be a decade or two later that an AGI gets unleashed on us
