I think this thought is quite insightful.
LinkedIn for example has definitely turned from whatever it was, to containing quite alluring photos of women ('Businesswoman taking a break on the beach;' Me at the gym on a break between writing great copywriting e-mails', etc).
Whilst it's far from what the OP has in mind - it may at least be what the thin end of the wedge looks like.
