Yup. IR has got the distinct advantage of not requiring spectrum licensing. And as far as I can tell, we are not quite done exploring the opportunities for bandwidth and reliability optimizations affforded by that medium, the way we did with copper and fiber optics in the last two decades.

Will newer generations even have TVs?

I’d imagine they’d be completely replaced by smartphones and XR headsets in the near future.

I can't use my google home app controller to control my google chromecast on Netflix. I think we are at least a decade away still.

Not sure about that, IMO TVs are still the most comfortable approach to visual media (except when /r/tvtoohigh obviously).
