That’s a really good one. I wish I could have my eye blink statistics.

This is especially true for me. Because I can only wink with my left eye. I cannot close my right eye and leave my left eye open. Anyone else? I can blink both, obviously. But I cannot close my right eye without also closing my left eye.

I think blink is both eyes and wink is one eye. So this thought may be incorrect.

That's why I always equalize my blinking at the end of every month. Gotta have even wear and tear on either side.

“Winking” is a word mainly used for closing one eye as a form of body language. The physical closing and opening of an eye is blinking, wether it’s both eyes or just one.

This is true for most people but there’s bound to be some people where it’s not. At least not right now.

And the worst part is, you’ll never know which. Time to start counting…

Only_Bad_Habits t1_j9sg92p wrote

not true. blinking is with both eyes, by definition. one eye has winked more times than the other.

voldi_II t1_j9sgsqs wrote

it’s funny how i know which one it is, too, because i can barely wink with my right eye

Travwolfe101 t1_j9shsvf wrote

Add on:

And you'll probably never know which one has blinked more.

wormholetrafficjam t1_j9ssgzt wrote

The crazier thought is that someone might be out there who’s had the same number of blinks on both eyes. It’s unlikely, but not impossible. Even with uneven blinking

Hatless_wizard t1_j9svmiv wrote

Isn't it only considered blinking if it's done with both eyes? If you only use one eye, wouldn't it be a wink instead? What if you only have one eye, is it blinking or winking then? Does it matter whether or not the closing of one or both eyes is reflexive or done at will? I need to go to bed.

One eye has winked more. They have blinked the exact number of times.

My sister probably has even blinks, she couldn't wink to save her life

I don't know about this one. It's just a random assumption, it might not even be true.

It's like if I said: "you are a bad singer", because most people are

Sorry if my phrasing made you feel left out, I didn’t realise you dedicated your life to making sure both eyes had the same amount of blinks. If it makes you feel any beter, I did mean to say for most people or “probably”. I made this post at 1 AM.

My right for sure. I'll often keep my left closed while I'm reading.

But still a good showerthought

I mean, you cant know if you have blinked an even or odd with your eyes, so it could very well be a 50/50 situation around the world, ad you would never know if you are correct

tommy4318 OP t1_j9tw0hb wrote

No, but statistically it is more likely to have one eye be off at least a good few blinks. The odds of those numbers being exactly the same are very, very small. Even as a child, you probably blink one eye every once in a while. Add the fact that aiming and winking is typically done with one (same) eye, it’s very rare to have an equal number.

Mildly Interesting story: When my first son was about 3-4 years old, he was the same way. So I figured it was a genetic thing, I shrugged: “hmm that’s mildly interesting…”. And went about my life, and then when he was about 6 years old, mind you , we hadn’t discussed this eye blinking other than in passing, like a few years prior, he came running into my office: “dad, I did it!!!” And I naturally said, “awesome! I’m excited for you, but did what?” “I can wink my right eye, all by itself.”..so he, through practice, was able to train his eye to blink independently….

Marksideofthedoon t1_j9uncdi wrote

Wait...don't everyone's eyes blink at the same time?
I mean, I've closed individual eyes a separate amount of times, but blinked? They've always blinked at the same time every time.

This is an interesting thought! I've never stopped to think about the number of times each of my eyes have blinked. I'm curious to know if this is true for everyone or if there are some people who have an even number of blinks between their eyes. Has anyone here ever stopped to count?
