Well, in terms of the adventure, Ron was the third-wheel. He was always the sidekick, which was why he got pissed during the tri-wizard tournament.
Relationship-wise, Harry was the third-wheel. Having been relegated to the best friend's sister; while Ron, the sidekick, gets the leading girl.

I mean the romance between Ron and Hermione doesn't really start until the later books and even then it's pretty tame. On the other hand the 2 of them wouldn't shut up about Harry.
