You'd think we would all be driving around with bumpers and covers to keep our car from scratches, dents, paint damage, or sun damage.

Well, wouldn't a car cover be nearly as expensive as the car itself? And it may weigh the car down and not to mention that the car itself is designed to protect itself and the passengers so there is no point
Probably initially, I'm not sure, but the price probably goes way down and the idea would become as streamlined as possible, if it were to become a common thing that everyone uses. The way phone cases used to be expensive as fuck but now they're a fraction of the cost. Most of them anyway.

This actually already exists and has for many years, its called paint protection film. Costs several thousand dollars depending how much coverage you want, protects from rock chips, minor scratches and dings. Also has UV inhibitors in the film to protect from sun damage as well.
Oh wow. I wonder why the same mentality is different when it comes to phones.
Probably because a $800 phone can be sufficiently protected with a $25 case, but even if you have a car worth $20k or $10k the cheapest you’d find a shop to apply that coating including the cost of material is $4k minimum.
If phone cases on average costed $200 i bet we’d see less phones with cases on them.

Okay, get this: a phone cover is cheap and protects the phone from damage that would make it much worse to use. A car cover on the other hand is expensive and will only protect it from superficial damage that does not affect operation in any meaningful way.

The car is both a cover for us as well as a mode of transportation
Almost all cars come with a clear coat layer that is at least twice as thick as the paint.
