I recently joined LA Fitness in Garden City. I was very hesitant as the reviews online were terrible (filthy club, jerky staff & members, busted cardio machines), but since it is literally a five minute walk from my house I looked into it anyway. I was given an extended guest membership and in that time I didn’t see anything like what was mentioned in the reviews. People were nice, it seemed about as clean as any other chain gym like Planet. No broken machines that I encountered. I mentioned this when I signed up and apparently they have new mgmt who are committed to improving the place. I do think it’s too expensive (I’m paying $34/mo) and it should be more like $10-20/mo, but it’s worth it for me as proximity removes an excuse for not going and I need all the motivation I can get . I can’t really speak to locker room cleanliness as I don’t use it. So, that’s what I have to say about this place. If it seems like a possible fit, give it a chance, they seem to have taken the bad reviews seriously.

To vague, what are you looking for in a gym? And more important, what are you not looking for?

I'm really glad to hear this.

My partner and I joined January 2022, when it was under the 'new' Esporta label. We paid $25 a month, that included 2 free guests for unlimited time.

Unfortunately, we witnessed everything those poor reviews said. Once, there was even a fight in the middle of the free weight section, and I was sure I was about to witness a murder. Cops were there 3 times for the 6 months that we went there. It was always covered in used paper towels and empty drink cans/bottles. There were drain flies in the bathroom sinks and showers, if they were even operational. Knowing they aren't as bad as it once was makes me want to give it a shot again in the future because I did like the space, amenities and free weights.

Im a little biased, but if you’re willing to drive to Pawtucket, American Muscle Corps is a great gym with a good community vibe. Three squat racks, two platforms, free weights, and cardio equipment.
