Wikipedia confirms, Washington is 563 square miles to Providence’s 436. However, Providence’s population is over 660k while Washington’s is under 130k.

Counties still exist in RI, but they just don’t do anything other than be a line on a map. MA is pretty much the same aside from a few counties.
They exist the same way an old stone wall runs parallel to the highway. They are no longer used as a political unit, nor do they truly demark boundaries. They are a relic; a historical residue.
It's funny that the state has 5 counties when there are counties that are larger than our entire state.
