Looking for Jewish Seeded Rye like KORBS BAKERY used to make

Deracinated OP t1_ixsmyj6 wrote

Yes! The best bagels in history. The closest I’ve gotten is a Hasidic Jewish bakery in Philly and I try to go as often as possible when I’m in the area. I’m hoping RI has something similar.

I'd be interested in this myself! Nothing like authentic bagels!

Leave RI. I lived there for 13 years, and while I absolutely love RI, outside of seafood and Italian food, there is nothing else good there food wise. Definitely no good bagels.

There’s Bubbie’s on Hope st in providence, which is a more of a market. They have bagels, but they are not really a true Jewish bakery.

Korbs Bakery was very good and unfortunately long gone along with another nostalgic spot Millers Delicatessen. It's been years since Korbs closed and the last Jewish style bakery in the state, Rainbow Bakery in Cranston, closed a couple of years ago. They made a good rye bread but not quite like the old Korbs. While there is a Jewish community in the Providence area I don't think it has the critical mass required at this point to allow the success of a small and specialized real Jewish bakery. Let me also squeeze in a tearful shout out to the also very much missed Davis Dairy Store where you could buy hand cut slices of smoked salmon and watch it being sliced.

There are a few bakeries in Brookline and Newton which would be about an hour's ride. Locally you can try Bubbie's as already suggested and there is a new bakery at the corner of Cypress and Camp St, Oak Bakeshop, which seems to be more pastry oriented but might do bagels too.

Buns makes fucking amazing challah, babka, burikas, etc, but no bagels :(

Oak Bake Shop (Camp and Cypress on the East Side) is in their own words: “a Jew-ish bakery.”

Aggravating-Sport359 t1_ixt2xho wrote

Does anyone else really like the Eastside Marketplace bagels? They say they’re made in house and this Jew thinks they’re pretty ok! (Def better than rebelle or pvd bagels)

drthsideous t1_ixt41w6 wrote

No they wouldn't. Because RI's Asian food is bad. It got better since my first year there for sure when there was only a few sushi places in the entire state. But it is by no means diverse or very good. I've lived in 8 states. RI being the second longest of those. And while not the worst, def not good either. It's got great Italian food and seafood, best I've had. But everything else is a big nope.

I would kill a man for a good bialy. /s. As for bagels I decided to make my own. I have had reasonable success, and bialys are next on my list. OCCASIONALLY Stop & Shop in Cranston has bialys somehow. They are good enough. Curious to see how I do.

You can't find good NY bagels in RI and it makes me sad... But Bagel Gourmet in Providence is decent. They do make their own. And there are a few locations I believe.

Beezlegrunk t1_ixtctr7 wrote

Depends on where else you’ve lived. Everybody here is somehow convinced the food is great, but if you’ve lived in NYC or SF (and probably LA — don’t know, never lived there), you know most food in RI is pretty second- and third-rate (at best). Sorry …

DJFurioso t1_ixtcuze wrote

And their staff is lovely! Their bagels don’t have the proper chew and density of my favorite ny bagels but they do make a damn good sausage egg and cheese. Super friendly staff and definitely a solid contender for best bagels in the city.

DJFurioso t1_ixtda38 wrote

Just opened, so they are still just figuring things out. I’m not sure they’ll be doing bagels and bread, but the sticky roll and cinnamon bun I’ve tried were really good. Coffee offerings are very solid. Good addition to the neighbor.

I know that the cities of Newton, Brookline, Brighton, Sharon, and Natick, MA have large communities of Jewish people. Would be worth it to look into bakeries in those areas.

Picky New Yorker- for RI this place gets an A. Compared to real NY bagels they get a B+. That is the best I know of except when Bubbies gets a supply up from NYC

Their sausage egg and cheese is amazing... They get the cheese so melty. One of the things I miss most about NY/Long Island are the Kaiser rolls and egg sandwiches... But Bagel Gourmet is good. And you are right, the people there are great!

Bingo! I grew up in and currently live in NYC. These guys trying to tell me their Asian food is amazing. Flushing Queens would like to have a word with them. I hate NYC, like fucking hate it. But the food is amazing. And I love RI, I'd kill to be able to move back, but the food is mostly bad. And I've lived way more places than most people, all over the country, so I'd like to think I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.

Hm, so I don't know of any exclusively Jewish delis left but I've had pretty good bagels here. (lived in NYC for 6 years) Coffee & Bagel Connection in Narragansett had some tasty bagels with a good exterior crunch. Providence Bagel in URI was decent too. Second the recommendation for Bunz on Aquidneck for babka.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Jamos bagels who distributed out of Nitro bar but I heard he's closing shop to go to college. The Cheddar Jalapeño was SO GOOD.

I lived in SF for many years, we stack up nicely. As good? Probably not, but we have excellent restaurants all over. Just because NYC one of the greatest cities in the world has a better scene (how many millions of people live in each of the boroughs?) doesn't mean RI food sucks. I mean come on.

3

CriticalLime t1_ixux7tq wrote

The Bagel scene in this city is just abhorrent. Cafe Fresh Bagel in Needham and Framingham MA make some of the best around. Also Rosenfelds in Newton Center is awesome too.

PVD Bagel sucks

Little???????

Rhode Island is overflowing with fantastic Korean spots, that are off the beaten path and are super authentic. Same thing goes for Cambodian food too — Cranston is also the only place I’ve found legit pork buns like the ones they day in NYC Chinatown.

Take a seat sir and or madam, please.

Brotendo88 t1_ixvanzc wrote

Bagel Boyz in Middletown actually has pretty damn good bagels in my opinion, but yes, Prov is lacking a proper NY style bagel.

Beezlegrunk t1_ixwbqwh wrote

“Stack up nicely”? “Excellent restaurants all over”? The Mission District alone — a neighborhood — has better Latino food than all of RI, and probably Boston too. Ditto the Richmond and Sunset for Asian food, which crushes Boston’s and wouldn’t bother dignifying RI’s smattering of mostly bland, substandard fare. RI has SF beat for seafood, and maybe Italian, but that’s about it.

I don’t know where you lived in SF or what you ate, but the two are miles apart culinarily. RI’s only real claim to fame is in comparison to other small cities, where it does punch above its weight. But it cannot go head to head with much bigger and more diverse metro areas, and having Johnson and Wales does not change that …

My time has come.

Ahem.

For quick "americanized" korean food -- head to Ichiban in Cranston. I know, Japanese name but Korean and Japanese food with decent sushi too. You'll the staples -- the Jjigaes, the bulgogi, the Japchae, along with various Katsus as well. Family run, big staple in the community. On the way check out Mirae market for your Korean cooking staples.

If you don't want to head to Cranston -- hit up Sura in Providence. Same thing, but a little more "upscale" feel. Comes with the price tag too.

Want real korean bbq -- like grills, soju and Somaek towers? Sura in Johnston. it's also AYCE. Want more of a modern party atmosphere -- try Lecker if it's still open.

Want Korean fried chicken? BBQ Chicken on Thayer is the spot.

Want pojangmacha food? aka Tteukboki, Omurice, Katsu of all sorts? Wok & Pot in Providence.

As for Cambodian -- any of the Apsara's in providence and 4 Seasons Restaurants.

And lastly for Thai / Cambodian -- I LOVE Red Rice in Warwick, that place is legit -- has a nice atmosphere, delicious food, and the kids working the register while doing homework, as all legit delicious restaurants are.

My comments below were in response to those by u/HeadyBeersBrah, who’s one of those people on Reddit who makes big, bold statements about things he doesn’t actually know anything about, and then deletes them when other people who can actually substantiate their perspectives make it clear that he’s got nothing to add.

He made broad statements about the food in RI being comparable to that in the SF Bay area (it’s not), and even claimed to have lived there, but offered only vague generalities. There’s no point in trying to engage with people like that, because they lack real knowledge of the things they pontificate about, yet seem to get some sort of gratification from pretending otherwise, though I’m not sure why.

So then...don't. Surely you see how it's a bit self-defeating to make a comment to someone and tag them while saying it's pointless to talk to them, right? You are allowed to just...not comment.
