Gotta be more specific. There’s way more than just seafood in Providence. What type of food do you like?

It's the ocean state, some sort of seafood is going to be on most menus. Places with less seafood are probably going to be ethnic places, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Mexican.

I like Mexican, Italian, American-fare, and Indian.

I can't do Chinese because their sauces most likely contain some variation of seafood. Unfortunately, I need a restaurant that doesn't have a language barrier so they understand the severity of my allergy.

For Mexican, I liked Capitol Hill Taqueria. Best and most authentic mexican food I’ve had on the east coast.

There are tons of Italian restaurants on Atwells. I went to Cassarino’s a few weeks ago and it was really good but pricey. I didn’t see any seafood on the menu there.

I’ve only been to Providence once but am moving there at the end of the year, so may not be the best to answer. But I can tell you from my time there that there is a ton of variety of good restaurants.

Why do you need a place without seafood? Just tell them you have a shellfish allergy. In fact here they all do a super job of limiting issues when a known allergy is present.

I am not sure why anyone here is saying “Italian places won’t have seafood”. Uh. Yeah that’s dead wrong. Every Italian place here in RI has fra diablo (spicy seafood pasta) or lobster ravioli or some other seafood based pasta dish.

Again. You should go to a higher end place and tell them of your specific allergy and stress it is severe. They will take care of you.

Ok. I am going to be very frank here.

If your allergy is truly that severe and you are that nervous. Don’t go out to eat. Anywhere. Especially in an area like RI where seafood is a staple in all cuisines and cooking here.

I feel for you and understand how much it can restrict you and all. But if it’s that bad then why take the risk. Otherwise. Trust the people to be professionals and do their job. No restaurant wants an ambulance showing up because they almost killed a customer. If you trust the pilot to fly the plane or doctor to do the surgery. Trust the kitchen staff to not cross contaminate.

If you don’t trust them…Stay home.

It’s really that simple.

Do you have a 110 Grill around you? It’s a chain with an allergy commitment if you’re that nervous. There’s one in Providence. Where do you go to eat at home?

A really safe bet would be Plant City. There’s a variety of fare and it’s all vegan. And very good!

As another here suggested Plant city is the answer OP. Entirely vegan restaurant and they have 3 different concepts including Italian, Mexican, and American fare (burgers and such) so it hits your preferences exactly. I'm not vegan and the food there is great!

Breakfast and breakfast diners are probably your safest bet. Just make sure they don't have clam chowder on the menu. It is Rhode Island, after all. Italian will definitely have fish and clams. Mexican will have fish tacos. American will have clam chowder as a side. Indian, maybe.

Totally agree with what you're saying, and maybe I'm more in my head than I'd like to be. I do carry an epi-pen. I just feel bad for my partner who wants to try these restaurants, and I get skittish. I just wish there were more veggie/vegan restaurants around like Plant City.

I live in Pittsburgh and we have a handful of restaurants that don't have any seafood on the menu, so I guess I am also used to that.

We have so many great places!! And we have plenty of vegan spots!! These are ones I know of since I'm not vegan. I'll add when I think of more.

Basil & Bunny, Garden Grille, Veggie Fun, PiANTA Vegan Restaurant, Julian's, Wildflour, Nice Slice Pizzeria.

If you like Indian, the folks at Rasoi and Kebab and Curry are super helpful when it comes to accommodating food allergies. By extension, I'd assume the same of their other restaurant, Rasa.

I had written off ever being able to eat Indian food again. My friend with celiac disease told me about Rasoi, and I was thrilled.

So check with one of their restaurants before you go, but they might be a good option!

Most good restaurants have a plan for severe food allergies. You just need to declare them before you order. If the place truly gives a shit, they will go out of their way to limit cross-contamination.

Nicks on Broadway does have fish but they take allergies very seriously.

I have a severe nut allergy. The strictest, craziest protocol I’ve seen in the state is PF Changs. They have a separate menu. And one of the cooks actually came out to talk to me. Surprisingly, a family friend passed away from a severe nut allergy at The Capital Grille ($$$) across the street.

Veggie fun is a Vegan Japanese place.

That is horrible. Out of curiosity, are food allergies so bad that treatments like epipens and such don't work?

Idk, mine has always gotten me to the ER. An epipen buys you about 30 minutes to get medical treatment you have anaphylaxis. You can give more than one shot for super severe cases.

How severe ? Like so severe that if you eat something at an air show prepared near / with other foods containing nuts that you’ll have a reaction?
