Connecticut born and Rhode Island raised here. New Haven pizza(aka Pepe’s) is the best on earth. Rhode Island style pizza is trash. New York is okay. I’ve even had Italian in Italy and it sucks a bag of D’s compared to new haven style.

We really love it! But I do have to say, it is a bit expensive for what it is.

If I really need a fix, I just drive down to Sally's. Worth the ride.

MikeMac999 t1_iw3wasr wrote

There’s better, there’s worse, but Pepe’s is certainly enjoyable.

It's more like Pee Pees pizza.

In all fairness the one time I went it fucking sucked, but I hear the OG location is actually worth the time of day

Legit best pizza in RI in my opinion… a touch on the expensive side

I grew up in New Haven. Pepe's will always be my favorite. Tomato pie, Plain cheese and my absolute favorite, Bacon, white clam sauce with garlic!

Frank Pepe’s on bald hill is definitely overrated. There are much better places to go for pizza like Roma on Federal Hill

8

RunEnvironmental4932 t1_iw42aph wrote

It was pretty good but there's so much good pizza in RI, it wasn't worth the drive down Bald Hill Rd for me.

jeffbudz t1_iw42xe4 wrote

When Frank Pepe’s first opened on Bald Hill, we got takeout and it wasn’t that good. Doesn’t travel well. Last year we gave it another try (dine-in) and it was amazing. The staff there are really great too. Right now it’s one of our favorite places to go out. Costs under $50 for a large with a pitcher of Bud Light. These days that ain’t a bad deal.

I like Pepe’s but catanzaros is omg sooooo good

If you’re looking for good pizza at a decent price, try Pizza Nomad in West Warwick. No dine in, just delivery and take out.

rebeccavt t1_iw4aw59 wrote

I used to live in Southern Vermont, and would make road trips to Pepe’s in New Haven. New Haven pizza is my favorite though. The one in Warwick is really good, and good pizza is hard to find in RI, but IMO none of the franchises (or whatever they are) are as good as the original.

It’s ok. I’ve had it many times and tbh I like Anthony’s coal fired pizza better.

FlyingAvatar t1_iw4cqm1 wrote

It's fine. There is better to be found for the price.

Figidini is better, IMO, for pricey Italian-style wood-fired pizza.

Catanzaro's is where it's at for me, but to each their own.

A lot of people around here will swear by Sicilia's or Caserta's, but I think they are crazy.

MadLove1348 t1_iw4go0j wrote

Went to school in New Haven and Pepe’s is simply overrated. While it’s nice having a slice of New Haven style pizza in RI, it’s the worst option of the bunch. Worth the 1.5 hour drive to New Haven to get Modern, Bar or Nolo.

brick1972 t1_iw4h9bn wrote

Not as good as the original in New Haven, but none of them are so it's nice to have one in Warwick (also generally I end up at Sally's when I make the trip as well :D )

It’s amazing. Every time I’m in Warwick and drive by it, which is often, I want to go. I don’t, but I want to.

And when I eat somewhere else in Warwick, I leave sad that I didn’t eat that pizza.

And this coming from a lady that never gave a shit about pizza. “ITS ALL GOOD”, I used to say.

That place is the best.

spoobles t1_iw5cbrf wrote

The original Sally’s (they’re franchising and quality is down since the Consiglio’s sold) kicked ass. Best pie. Grew up in New Haven and have eaten at all of the greats many times. Best now is Modern, it’s the last family run apizzeria of the big 3. Pepe’s is still a quality pie. But if you call Sally’s garbage it’s clear you don’t know shit or have only eaten there in the past two years

Shoddy-Sleep-8832 t1_iw5igxk wrote

Agreed but it's a completely different style of pizza. Saying one is better than the other isn't really fair. They are both excellent at exactly what they are trying to accomplish from a pizza.

beansoupscratch t1_iw5locm wrote

I honestly like the one in Warwick better than the one in Mohegan Sun. I’ve been to a few others in CT. I love the pizza.

Crust is usually burnt and the sauce is too heavy compared to the cheese ratio

Fresh tomato pie during the summer is amazing. The main issue I have had is the crust, it's hit or miss. It can def be on the burnt side about 40% of the time due to the super thin crust. It's really good but not even close to the original Frank Pepe's in CT.

I never loved ricotta on pizza too much, I tried it a bunch. 5 cheeses, meats, etc. I only like it in small dollops on pizza. FoodLove in Middletown probably has the best pizza in the state now though. They use a focaccia dough for all their pizzas. It's a mouth orgasm excuse my language but it really is. My favorite is their Riccotta Rhode Island Mushroom pizza. always a large. last me 2-3 days. I don't know anyone that works there i just love their food.
