Does anyone know why old exit 12B-A has been relabeled to Exit 28C-A-B?

Traveling south, "C" brings you to 113 west towards Route 2. "A" leads to the Warwick Mall. "B" Leads you to 113 East.

I would think they would be 28 C-B-A respectively...not C-A-B.

Bugging the crap out of me.

EDIT: Adding images of the signs

EDIT2: Here's the response from the Project Manager at RIDOT: "The southbound exit numbers follow the numbering northbound. The exit to I-295 is Exit 28 A The Rte. 113 Interchange becomes 28 B-C (However no Exit 28 C northbound) While it is somewhat inconsistent it keeps the exit numbers consistent for the destinations. This is the same issue noted at I-195."

Because Federal Highway Administration said so: https://www.dot.ri.gov/projects/exitnumbers/index.php

No actually, they don't. "C" is not listed. 🤷

Well, in all honesty, the only think I can think of is RIDOT screwed it up. I’ll be around there this weekend. I’ll post if I think it figured it out 🤷🏼‍♀️

The way RIDOT has been signing the old exit tabs has been questionable in workmanship and consistency.

  1. No standard on the Dimensions (some are more square, other's tend to be longer)
  2. No standard on the naming convention (I've seen old exit 27 labelled as "Old 27")
  3. No standard placement (I.e. some signage is on the gore point exit sign, while other aren't)

This is almost as bad as a couple years back when a contractor was overzealous with putting in the Curvature warning signs for the offramps. Oddly enough it was also old exit 12 they messed up on. The contractor ended up mounting the 270 turn sign wrong. I think only after contacting the DOT was it corrected

If there is a silver lining, I'm thinking the lower number old exit tabs are being reused from I-295; at least they were consistent

Thanks for the validation that it might just be a screwup rather than something designed. I just emailed RIDOT for clarification...will share what I find out here!

Not the first time they screwed up. The one I drive by every day is to Quonset. They put the signs up wrong so you think you need to be in the left lane for Quonset only to get find out that one goes to Frenchtown road. Every morning people are swapping lanes and it's an easy fix!

I was listening to WPRO and the DOT was answering questions. He said the first set of signs were put up incorrectly and were going to be swapped. It hasn't happened yet. The second set are correct but the first set, where you have enough time to switch lanes, are up wrong. The signs should be aligned to the denote exit positions.

12A is 28A and 12B is 28B...

There is no C

What ended up happening;
12B (113 West and I-295 North) turned into 28 A and C
12A (113 East) turned into 28 B

What should have happened
12B turns into 28 C and B (I-295 N and 113 West)
12A turns into 28 A (113 East)

Even Google Maps got it messed up right now (Claiming both exits as 28B)

UPDATE: Contacted RIDOT.

Their response:

Good morning,

Thank you for reaching out. I will forward the below issue to the project manager. Once I have received a response, I will follow up with you.

If there's a sign that shows C, then it must be a mistake unless they are adding a ramp or something

But I totally get what you mean. I want to go drive down by it so I can check it out haha. Theres all kinds of discrepancies throughout this new mile market exit numbers crap.

My guess is that A and B have to designate opposite directions (East/West, for example) and that the I-295N offshoot of 28A is called 28C for that reason.
