**Edit - a commenter (correctly) pointed out that redactions and bail are decided by judges and the AG. I'm unable to update the subject line of the post.

______

Why does the former mayor of Newport's son Christian Winthrop have a long, violent rap sheet and heavily redacted arrest records, and is released without bail?

Police's job is to protect entrenched power structures and capital not the average citizen.

Yah when I posted about this in the Newport sub, the only comment was "His website doesn't turn a profit, so why do you care?"

Hilariously Newport.

Besides caring about assault victims, his TMZ-style website bills itself as a "news" site yet he wouldn't know what journalism was if it punched him in the face, as he often does to other people. A few years back there was a suicide at Second Beach. He showed up and filmed the authorities removing the dead body. That's not journalism, and it's unethical.

He makes himself a public figure, as such, he should be held to an even higher level of scrutiny than the average citizen. You can't go around assaulting people and getting away with it cause daddy-17th-century-mustache-guy was the mayor. Where is the outrage in Newport?

The police don’t decide on bail. Direct your anger toward judges and the AG.

Outside of the most serious cases, every defendant is released on some kind of bail. Where are you getting the idea that this guy was “released without bail”? The statement doesn’t make sense. And obviously the headline doesn’t follow any of this.

Most cases/arrest result in "Own recognizance (OR), also called personal recognizance, means a release, without the requirement of a posting bail, based on a written promise by the defendant to appear in court when required to do so."

Yes, the judges decide bail but it's worth noting that the municipal court judges are appointed by the City Council and Mayor... and they all have long-standing connections to Winthrop.
