You can definitely do it in a single appointment. If you haven't yet, change some accounts online to your RI address like bank/cellphone so you can get qualified mail in that name. Beyond that part, you just need to show up and not be blind.
For the registration, there's more red tape but I'd start by telling your insurance company.

You will have to get a VIN check done on your car before you go to the DMV. There is a VIN check station on Phenix Ave in Cranston that is open Monday through Friday. You will need to pay $20 with check or money order.

How I got through it last month
1.Change address with insurance 2.vin check with local police dept. ( I went to the DMV first thinking the vin check was later, lucky Middletown pd checks regardless of residence) 3. DMV ,. Make an appointment , bring your title , proof of citizenship like a birth certificate or passport and 2 articles of mail to your address. You should be able to do both the license and the registration on the same appointment. 4. Get inspection within 5 days. If you don't they will suspend the registration after a few weeks. Ask me how I know. 5. I also got a letter explaining that I need to get my insurance company to send verification of insurance to the DMV. Have not done this yet but looks like they give you about 2 months to figure that out. Sounds like a pita if you have a shitty insurance company like I do.

Do you own your car or have a copy of the original title? If not you’ll need to get it sent to Cranston and you can only make the appointment at Cranston. I have a leased car and it was a nightmare to get my car stuff switched to RI

fyi paystubs/lease/utility bills that list your name and address are also acceptable proof of residence
buddhamanjpb t1_j9qj48u wrote
To start you'll need the title. If it's leased or financed you'll need a copy of it.
If the vehicle was registered out of state before this, you also need a VIN check before you can do anything. Call your town's police department and find out what days/times they do them.

Eventually your registration could lapse/be revoked bc of lack of insurance in the state the car’s registered in, and your insurance company might not be thrilled. In theory you could keep the car registered and insured in the previous state but that would be a. not legal b. potential grounds for your insurance company to deny a claim. But anecdotally, the RI DMV doesn’t seem concerned with doling out punishment if you go to register after >30 days

I believe you can only use AAA if you’re already a RI resident and are already established with the state registration. I had AAA but had to do everything at the DMV since I was from out of state.

Cranston isn't that bad now that they have the appointment system. No more sitting there waiting all day.

You can try one of the satellite dmvs like in middletown or Wakefield but idk if they'll be able to do all of it. You may have to go to the Cranston dmv which is horrendous to take care of most of it.
