Considering Moving (Teacher Employment Questions) Help?

I'm thinking of moving back to the area - think Dauphin County. My best friend here in California is thinking of relocating, too, but has some questions that I can't answer. What's the employment situation for teachers out there? She's special education certified, with moderate/severe qualifications. She's thinking of moving into speech therapy. Do you think there are employment opportunities that will support it?

I'm teetering about making the move, too, but I miss having seasons, and I do have family back there. My employment options are lousy all over!

I have a teacher sister here in PA. one thing I can tell you is that she's overworked because she's qualified to the exact same standards as your friend. maybe that's the same all over. but pa definitely needs teachers so she's gonna get something.

My brother is a director of special ed and I remember years ago when he first graduated my father in law had to put in a word for him. You always had to know someone in order to land a full time gig. Times may have changed though, I don’t know.

Yes! At least in the smaller systems north of Harrisburg - and farther, from what I've heard.

One of my family members moved to from Virginia to Dauphin County to teach this year.

She is happy there, but the system is having a hard time finding teachers.

There's always places for special needs teachers and gov Shapiro just opened up government jobs with no college diploma.

Don't know about speech therapy but if she is special ed certified, she will get a job. There are so many unfilled positions and/or positions filled with emergency certified people. Central PA teacher here.

They have. This wasn’t PA but when I graduated college in 2007 two of my friends ended up teaching for a few years in other states. They didn’t even have teaching licenses. One was computer science he taught math in FL and the other was an English major who taught French in VA. Kidding, he taught English of course.
