Why are you buying trash bags from your township?

Well, your option is probably paying a quarterly fee that is much higher. Where do you think trash goes? Landfill with fees. How does it get there? Picked up by paid employees in an expensive truck that requires fuel and maintenance.

Ok so you are asking why your township is charging you to pick up your trash not asking why your township charges you money to buy a bag correct? If so thats because trash pickup isnt free....If they are charging you for an actual trash bag to use then you go to a store and buy them...

This is what happens when people complain about their taxes so much that the municipality starts cutting services out and/or privatizing them. The stuff your taxes used to cover turn into use fees.

City of Pittsburgh charges 1% EIT but you can throw damn near anything on the curb on trash day and they'll take it. In McCandless you're paying $70/bin every four months because they privatized that shit.

Right. We took up a bunch of carpet last year and the township we live in gladly took it, as long as we cut it down to the size they asked. But I did, put it on the curb and the next day it was gone. No extra fees, no special pick up, etc.

I have family in Washington state. They give you one garbage can and I think if you want another one, you have to pay for it, and then for the pick up of that garbage can. I always looked at it and said, what if you host Thanksgiving dinner and generate more trash than normal? You're just paying extra to host, I guess.

New Castle always did this. EVERYONE complained about it. Because the bags were super super THIN and they’d rip very easily so you could only put so much in each one and you’d end up buying a bunch at a time.

Is there an alternative trash provider with better options? In my area, 3 private companies are competing with the township. It is like the cable companies you have to jump around every year or 2 to get the best price.

Trash pickup prices have gone up everywhere due to higher gas prices, rising dumping fees, increased wages, higher insurance rates.

I love that my township allows us to pick whoever we want for our trash service. I pay pay my bill yearly in order to get a little bit of a discount, and this past year my trash company raised my bill $100 a year. I shopped around and got last year's rates with another company. I switched.

On the other hand, my husband grew up in the Philadelphia area and his parents never got a trash bill per se and their trash is picked up twice a week.

Do you have the option to take your trash to the county dump?? $6 a bag seems like a lot. To give you some perspective, I pay $360 a year and I am allowed an 84 gallon tub of trash each week.

Some areas, especially rural areas of the state, require people to buy specially marked garbage bags for people to leave along the curb for pickup. These are usually sold in various sizes with maximum weight limits on them. Alternately, you can sign up for trash pickup through a trash pickup service such as Waste Management who charges a fee based on the distance they need to travel to your house and the number of other customers close to where you live. OP is apparently upset the local trash service upped the price of their bags.

Is this in addition to what the trash company charges you quarterly or is this the only fee for trash collection? If the latter, you are doing better than most of us vis-a-vis costs.

Same in Philadelphia. We are taxed to death and don’t get much for it, but wow will the garbage guys take anything. I’ve put out whole sheets of backer board with tile, contractor bags full of construction debris, whatever. They’ll take it.
