Bought a coal stove a couple years ago. Heats the whole house pretty affordably because it doesn’t do much to the electric bill

I would love to convert to a coal or wood burner stove, I’ve actually never seen a modern coal stove. UGI is taking over and I refuse to sell out to natural gas.

i will get through the winter, till summer, but also got a electric heater, and 3 pc's i mine crypto with so that helps alot

Every year I get the company I got the stove from to clean out the stove and make sure it’s running okay. Coal has gone up a bit this year but it was still about $620 for a ton and a half of coal and that will last me the whole winter. So I couldn’t imagine paying for electric heat to the UGI bastards

I have a natural gas heater and water heater. Neither is new or efficient. I pay maybe 50 a month during the winter for natural gas and I keep it at 74 since the house is 75 years old and drafty.
Natural gas ain't bad

I have a big wooden coal keeper out near my shed I bought off Facebook marketplace for like $60. It has a troff thing that I open into a bucket and carry it into a house. Probably fill up the stove every 3 days while it’s this cold

OK, where I grew up, many people used coal and had that separate walled off space near the coal furnace to store coal.

I bought a mini split heat pump because I could DIY it after my chimney for my oil boiler gave out. (Whole wall behind it rotted out.) Turned out to be a blessing in disguise… I’d have gone absolutely broke paying for oil this winter.
I have been supplementing with a wood stove for the super cold nights.

I completely redid it without reusing the hydronic baseboard. https://www.alpinehomeair.com/category/air-conditioning-cooling/ductless-mini-splits/four-zone-mini-split-systems
About $5k total including the tech coming out to charge it with refrigerant.
All the baseboard was rusted to heck and it’s nice to have the a/c now too. There are hot water heat pump options but i’d imagine they’re way harder to DIY. And much more expensive. https://www.spacepak.com/solstice-air-to-water-heat-pumps

Just checked, that is exactly the price I would pay where I am (rural Montgomery Co.) if I needed to get our 200 gallon tank filled today

I used to use fuelwonk but that site has become cancerous to use. Would like to find an alternative. Many places are so secretive about their pricing.
Just paid 3.99/gal for 100 gallons in Harrisburg area. Price is +/- .20c in this area depending on supplier.

We had a coal stove when I was growing up. Hopping out of the shower and standing in front of that things was awesome. Dealing with the ash was a pain in the ass though.
