The difference is republicans did not rally around Nixon during the watergate hearings. Trump is getting a full throat defense and the goal is to win the election and say it doesn't matter anymore.

Republicans would be smart to throw trump under the bus and be rid of his political baggage bc it doesn't serve the party anymore, just trump.
