So, second highest gas prices in county, second highest property taxes, extreme beurocracy, and lowest wages. Gee. I wonder why people/ businesses don’t want to stay or move here.

What are we getting for all this money? No, seriously. NY, CA costs with OH WV quality of life. Not going to cut it.

I remember when I got my first Job at 15 at a brand new Wegman's coming to the area. It was RIGHT before the minimum wage went up from $6.25 to $7.15... in 2007. When it happened, I was really excited!

Because I was 15...

The real kicker is that Wegman's was supposed to be like a "luxury" grocery store. I left Wegman's for Walmart 8 months later and got a $2.50 an hour increase at Walmart for the same cashier role.

Who actually pays minimum wage these days? When I was job hunting, the jobs were starting out at $10/hr minimum.

I saw a few that were $8.25, but that’s still above minimum wage.

Gas is down compared to a few months ago, I average $3.49 a gallon where I’m at.

The problem is it depresses all wages when it's so low. Really really need to have our schools teach critical thinking as 50% of the public don't understand causality. Wonder to which political spectrum they lean towards.

GOP still holds the senate. But yes, if they had control of house, senate, and governor the minimum wage would be raised in Pa. Unfortunately, the cancer in our state government still persists. Obstruction will be the goal of the state senate for at least the next 2 years. Gas taxes going up again Jan 1st thanks to republican governor Corbett and the white trash rubes’ favorite politicians in Harrisburg. But I’m sure it will all be dems fault.

PatientNice t1_j28ko4i wrote

But their actions and inactions will be more exposed. It will be fun watching legislation be passed in the house and then shut down in the Senate. If it doesn’t change after that, we’ll, you can’t fix stupid.

It’s contempt for the people. A new business moved into town. People were excited as it historically paid more than minimum wage. I personally heard the head of Chamber of Commerce tell insiders. Oh you don’t have to pay that much in this town. He was bragging I guess.

This should have millions of up votes. This is the answer right here. For all the complaining Republicans do, they had all the ample time to fix anything. Nothing was fixed, nothing was done. But sure it's all Wolf's fault.

Is there a single business in the state paying minimum wage? While I'm sure they would if they could, the labor market is much too high at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few one off examples but I rarely see entry and low skill positions posted under $10

This is a non-issue. Nobody is only getting paid minimum wage. Even McDonald’s in Shamokin is paying $15/hr to start.

Check this out:

> Wage Distribution of All Hourly Workers

>• In 2021, there were an estimated 63,800 Pennsylvania workers earning minimum wage or less. This is the lowest number of at or below minimum wage workers on record in this annual report series. It is 10,600 (14.2 percent) lower than the previous low of 2020 when it was 74,400. Workers earning minimum wage or less represented 2.0 percent of all hourly workers and 1.1 percent of all workers.

>• From 2020 to 2021, Pennsylvania’s hourly employment increased by 91,300 (+2.9 percent), while Pennsylvania’s overall employment increased by 26,200 (+0.4 percent). U.S. hourly employment increased by 2,807,000 (+3.8 percent), while the nation’s overall employment increased by 4,778,000 (+3.2 percent). The proportion of all workers receiving hourly rates in 2021 increased slightly in both Pennsylvania and the nation from 2020. In 2021, the percentage of the employed earning hourly rates was higher in Pennsylvania (55 percent) than in the U.S. overall (50 percent).

>• In 2021, there were an estimated 586,000 Pennsylvania workers earning near minimum wage ($7.26-$12.00). This was 107,100 (-15.4 percent) lower than in 2020 when it was 693,100.

>• Labor markets in the U.S. and Pennsylvania continued rebounding in both employment and wages from the pandemic-induced recession. The increase in employment and hourly workers was concentrated in higher wage workers which contributed to both the absolute and relative changes in the wage distribution. The volumes and proportions of hourly workers in the lower wage categories fell, while increasing for those above $12.00 an hour. The median wage in Pennsylvania increased from $16.50 in 2020 to $17.00 in 2021, while it rose from $16.32 to $17.00 in the nation.

>• Pennsylvania had a higher percentage (2.0 percent) of workers at or below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 than the nation (1.4 percent). About six out of every 10 wage earners in both Pennsylvania and the U.S. were in the highest wage category (of above $15.00). Pennsylvania’s share of wage earners in this category rose by 2.1 percentage points to 59.0 percent, while the nation’s percentage rose 3.9 percentage points to 60.0 percent.

According to official statistics, about 0.1% of people that are not young people earn minimum wage.

And it's most likely part-time positions that would have been volunteering positions but can't be for various legal reasons, so they pay minimum wage.

This minimum wage battle is a sham, like most things in politics. It just pits not so smart people against each other from both sides and keeps them busy fighting each other.

Think about it, if you are making less then that, you are making less then your grandparents stocking grocery shelves in high school.

Because a universal minimum wage is a fundamentally stupid idea.

Cost of living varies greatly across the state.

Federal worker salaries are adjusted for the area where the employee lives. That only makes sense. Private companies are starting to do the same with work-from-home arrangements if the employee moves away from high COLA locations.

−2

Fluid-Wrongdoer6120 t1_j2bb13y wrote

if you say so, personally I'd say its a good way to keep desperate to work people from being taken advantage of. Everyone knows that COL varies by region but there's still a minimum that will get you by, even in the cheapest area

This is not possible unless there is collusion between different employers. There was evidence of that happening with big Tech in Silicon Valley a while back, but there is no evidence of that ever happening in Pennsylvania.
