I first noticed this issue last year at the Gulf on Easton Rd in Bethlehem. They were either not there, or had red failed stickers on.
I stopped by that same location last week and I think they had up to date “pass” stickers.
IrresponsibleScience t1_izf0yqq wrote
This means they are dodging certification. Those stickers are required as evidence that they passed. The gas might be cheaper but you are likely not paying for a gallon of gas either.

I’m in the Lehigh Valley, and the Gulf gas stations around seem to consistently have significantly cheaper gas than anywhere around, even Costco and NJ stations. Made me a little suspicious, and I noticed this is the second Gulf I’ve gone to that doesn’t have a PA Weighs and Measures sticker.
What do y’all think?
ItsMePythonicD t1_izeh2yb wrote
I would not buy gas from them. Maybe even report them.
TheTemplarSaint OP t1_izeij3q wrote
The one I was at yesterday was Airport Rd by Copperhead Grille, so Lehigh Co which doesn’t have its own weights and measures like Northampton. Couldn’t figure out how to report with PA State weights and measures.
ItsMePythonicD t1_izek7mr wrote
Looks like you can report them here:

discogeek t1_izf74ye wrote
Nah, fuel dispensers are Agriculture (Weights & Measures), not DEP. Although they may forward things over to Ag for you. The counties do the inspections though, so you're not taking a bad path to resolution by contacting your county officials.

Thank you!

Report them and give an update then!

Report to the county. This is illegal and likely harms the citizens
badgerbarthowlemeiux t1_izejxtg wrote
Yeah it’s strange there are no stickers at all.
Is the cheaper gas because of the car wash thing or is it just significantly cheaper period?
TheTemplarSaint OP t1_izh8pb9 wrote
Just cheaper typically. Sometimes significantly enough that it seems weird. When I was there yesterday it was around 10 cents cheaper than Costco I think. It was cheaper than gas in NJ by a decent bit.

I worked at gas stations for like 20 years, in CA and PA. This is not good, nor proper.

Don’t buy and report it

Gulf Gas....now that's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time

Chevron acquired the Gulf brand in 1985. They sold it to Cumberland Farms in 2010. Cumberland Farms sold it to Arc Light Capital Partners in 2015.

Looks like a new pump maybe they are on the list for certification
dalex89 t1_izgyppk wrote
other than some finger prints, that pump looks just months old
ProZach82 t1_izfmjas wrote
They are required on the pumps either from the State or a local weights & measure (county) sticker on it. Ask for information and don’t use the pumps if you aren’t sure and it isn’t sealed.
LowNo5584 t1_izf845p wrote
The individual who tests is required to affix either a pass or fail sticker on the pumps. If there's no sticker, either the state (or county in some cases) either hasn't checked them, or the pump failed testing and the owner scraped it off. Make sure you know if the county you're in has a county level Weights and Measures Dept or if it's overseen by the state, then call them.

The real thing is GULF STATIONS STILL EXIST, the one in Oil City shut down in the 70s due to the arrow heads

Please note while they may not be certified, check inside on the wall. If they are legit you will see a pa dept of revenue gasoline revenue letter/ceftificate
TheTemplarSaint OP t1_izh7t1q wrote
That’s fine but it doesn’t mean the gallon I pay for is actually a gallon, right? That’s like having a PA contractors license and charging someone for X amount of lumber. Nobody is certifying how many 2x4s were actually provided.
Yankiwi17273 t1_izhw3sq wrote
I usually don’t notice them, but wow does a gas pump look naked without the stickers!

Contact PA Dept. of Ag. They handle the Weights & Measures inspection program.

I haven't purchased gulf gas since the late 70's because of engine knocks after using it.

Lol. All gas in your region comes from the same exact refineries.

and gas has changed quite a bit since the 70s. I mean...there is unleaded now!

Who knew🤷🏻♂️
TheTemplarSaint OP t1_izeyhwh wrote
Sure does. They’ll Chuck in different additives for the different brands, but the actual gas is the same.
homerj419 t1_izhd7tw wrote
But the tanks the stations hold them in aren't the same. Some have updated double walled fiberglass tanks others have outdated metal ones. Metal is corroded by the fill around the tank and also degrades overtime. Water and sediment enter and that's not good. And also as someone else mentioned additives from the separate fuel companies themselves and their methods of storage as well. Lots of variables

Even small retail businesses have weights and measures stickers inside verifying their scanners work correctly, so this is either shady or one person owns multiple gulf stations and has no idea those stickers should be visible
