do traditional browsers work the same? How about VPNs, Steam, and video players?

As I tell others, "Anything you can do in Microsoft Windows you can do better in Linux".
To answer your questions and get back on topic I'll keep it short here:
- Browsers do work the same
- VPN's work excellent. I use NordVPN
- Steam is native to Linux
- I use multiple video players, although I find that VLC works best for my needs
- I can multiple streams open at the same time without any problems. In Windows this isn't possible
- A very easy beginner distribution http://www.linuxmint.com Multiple others can be found at distrowatch.com
- Search Reddit or Facebook for Linux support groups

Thanks, this is great stuff. Any other helpful tips I should know about?

Give it a try before you download it. You can download a ISO image compatible with your system and place it on a USB stick to try it out without actually installing it
