Not the PA Turnpike...but...
I was going to Richmond, VA for an event many years ago. I took the DC Expressway, which recognizes EZ Pass. I drove down to Richmond and drove back to Pittsburgh using the DC Expressway.
I got a letter in the mail stating that I did not have an EZ Pass and was billed a higher rate for the DC Expressway and fees for manual processing of my license plate. I contact them, gave them my transponder number and told them that I drove on the DC Expressway twice - my transponder was picked up by their system and billed properly once, but somehow their system missed the transponder the second time.
They waived the additional fees, but still forced me to pay the higher rate for the DC Expressway.

I’ve had this happen more than 5 times since I’ve had a transponder for 15 years+. You can call and tell them your EZ Pass transponder # and they give you the EZ Pass rate.

I had that and I just went online and there was a button to challenge it. Only state that gave me hassle was delaware
Bobtom42 t1_iu4cjmi wrote
Yea I guess I didn't specify that this was a PA Ezpass but the issue was with New Hampshire. I didn't realize they were actually different entities with the same name....not sure how that all works.
Tyswid t1_iu4ct3x wrote
Neither do I. I got E-ZPass things from pa, nj, and DE. With a pa tag and the plate on file the only one I couldn't argue was DE bc they only do DE ones.

Wow that’s like one trip on the turnpike end to end without e-z pass.
Assholes. Maybe don’t automate tolls and cut jobs to increase profits and you’ll actually get paid.
kaazmar t1_iu3u2zd wrote
Automated tolls are an innovation and a solution to insane traffic problems. Everybody wants them.

I'd prefer having significantly less congestion and travel times from automated tolls...

Knock it off with your ignorance. How about you actually check their toll calculator: https://www.paturnpike.com/toll-calculator
Entering as far east as possible and exiting as far west as possible, without EZ Pass, is $95.
The turnpike has many improvement it could make and the endless tolls increases are ridiculous, but at least try to be accurate.
UnaffiliatedOpinion t1_iua9gzj wrote
What % of trips on the turnpike do you reckon are one way instead of round trip?
MortimerDongle t1_iu90ydc wrote
Or they could just get rid of the increased cost of not having ez pass.

in other words... "PA would create a bunch of criminals, more unregistered/uninsured drivers on the roads and further unemployment/homelessness over people who can't drive to work" all over $250 ...

I had something like this happen a few years ago. I got a letter saying i went through a toll booth without a transponder. They wanted to bill me the amount for the entire trip across the turnpike. >$60 at the time.
So i called them…
Me: my transponder must not have worked. I went from Donegal to Irwin.
Them: yes, we see from our photo records that your plate was imaged getting on at Donegal and leaving at the Irwin toll plaza.
Me: here is my transponder number, can you revise the charge to reflect the distance i went (Donegal to Irwin)?
Them: No, since your transponder was not working it is our policy to charge the fee for the entire distance of the turnpike. We have no way of knowing where you entered and exited.
Me: but you just said you have photos of my license plate entering at Donegal and exiting at Irwin.
Them: but we dont know if that was you.
Me: that’s my license plate number, which is linked to my transponder, which i provided, which means that was me.
Them: but we don’t know ho far you drove on the turnpike.
Me: you have photos from the Donegal and Irwin toll booths linked to my license plate, which is linked to my transponder, which proves where i was and who i was
Them: but it’s our policy…
I felt like i was in that Spongebob meme where Patrick looses his wallet.

Tarcanus t1_iu48yh4 wrote
For your education, use their toll calculator to actually see what it costs: https://www.paturnpike.com/toll-calculator
A full trip east to west without EZ pass is $95. Tons of the "PA Turnpike is most expensive Turnpike" articles interpret the data wrongly to generate clickbait.
DirtyHippyBastard t1_iu4bllj wrote
Yeah, 100 bux to drive yourself 400 miles is reasonable. 1000 toll collectors fired and rates continue to increase without any money returning to the economy thru wages. Nothing to see here.
Tarcanus t1_iu4dx9v wrote
Direct your ire to Rendell and Act 44 that forced the Turnpike to pay $500 million per year to PennDot. The debt means that Turnpike has to raise rates to pay their debts off from Rendell's past screw up.

You didn’t obviously feel the sarcasm in the post lol
Tarcanus t1_iu4b71w wrote
I guess not. But with the constant circle-jerk of crapping on the Turnpike based on poor data understanding, you can understand someone being tired of it.
linkdudesmash t1_iu4c9yt wrote
I can understand that.

Tolls were originally a temporary tax. Thank your politicians for keeping them around and raising them.
Atrocious_1 t1_iu5cinb wrote
Be cool if they'd crack down on trucking companies that operate here yet somehow are registered out of state so they don't pay the proper taxes, insurance, or fees. Maybe then they could invest in infrastructure as opposed to just raising toll rates, again.

Just remember the folks not paying their tolls make it more expensive for the rest of us. If you can afford to drive a car you can afford to pay the toll, so I have little sympathy for people who don't
No-Setting9690 t1_iu45tu9 wrote
Being the worlds most expensive toll road, not surprising they want to add this on to it.
Tarcanus t1_iu49sk7 wrote
Gotta stop reading clickbait. The article that claims the turnpike is the most expensive in the world is bunk.
It costs $95.20 to go east to west on the turnpike, 360 miles.
The next most expensive the "study" says is a road in Austria that costs $45.43 but is only 29.7 miles long.
The Austrian road comes out to 1.5 dollars per mile, and the turnpike is .26.
The PA Turnpike is not the most expensive at all. It's just 360 miles long and a full trip adds up.
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4a8rh wrote
No, you just provided my point. The most expensive is from end to end not per mile.
Tarcanus t1_iu4as1t wrote
What sense does it make to criticize it for that though? And what logic is there to comparing a 360 mile long roadway to a 30 mile long roadway?
That's such a HUGE false comparison.
Now, if there is another 360 mile long turnpike, let's compare THAT to the PA Turnpike, then you'll have an accurate comparison.
Of course the turnpike will have a higher cost because it's longer.
Just from a casual Google, it looks like the New York Thruway is over 100 miles longer than PA Turnpike and is much cheaper. Why not compare those?
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4d7iq wrote
SMH. Dude this your first day in statistics? You ever see MPG vs mileage per tank? There are many stats that have multiple ways of looking at them. Football, total points, points per game, points per run. Each is different.
I already stated which stat I'm talking about.
Tarcanus t1_iu4e1c3 wrote
So you're saying you want to be disingenuous and use whichever stat lets you say the turnpike is the most expensive even after shown information that factually says it's not? So, you want to use the example of tractor trailers or something, then, instead of typical 2 axle vehicles?
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4fcbd wrote
It is factual, you don't like it because it's calculated differently than you want.
You know nothing of statistics, how information is looked and data analysis.
Move along.
Tarcanus t1_iu4fzmv wrote
Provide your source data, then, as I'd like to be accurate.
Anything I've seen is comparing apples to oranges.
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4i3rq wrote
You are going out of your way to make it apples to oranges. The dataset is for end to end. You are the one who brought up per mile.
Let me guess you don't know the difference between quickest and fastest car?
Tarcanus t1_iu4ieix wrote
Yes, the dataset is for end to end, but only focusing on that ignores the length of the road which is incredibly important.
I was trying to break it down further to show how the cost is not the most expensive in the world.
The Turnpike is one of the longest in the world, which causes the price to be higher.
Complaining about the price is basically complaining the roadway is long. And that's ridiculous.
So, I'm asking if you have any data that compares same lengths of roadway, because that would actually determine how expensive it is.
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4it3s wrote
It still does not change the fact it is the most expensive end to end. I am not arguing it's the most expensive per mile. You're talking in circles and for some reason cannot grasp it's not the same discussion.
Tarcanus t1_iu4j77q wrote
Because it isn't the same discussion. Length of road correlates to more expensive trip end-to-end. That's why I broke it down to per-mile, because that's more accurate and removes length of roadway as a consideration.
It's increasingly looking like you're just stirring the pot by adding to the "turnpike is so expensive" circlejerk that happens on here every other week. You spout the miscontrued data of being most expensive, but ignore anything else that debunks that, then the others who won't look at the nuance jump on and agree with you.
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4jrbc wrote
I'm sorry you don't have the intelligence to understand both are correct, both are different data points and that the length does not matter for what I am saying. IT IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE IN THE WORLD period.
Tarcanus t1_iu4k7g5 wrote
Without the nuance of additional variables, sure. But actually interpreting it well means it's not the most expensive in reality. You're taking a data point and ignoring every other bit if nuance. And you've resorted to name-calling. Have a good one, but you've proven to be a troll.
No-Setting9690 t1_iu4l5qu wrote
Haha please point out the name calling. Go back to playing your pokemon and leave the datasets to adults.
