I noticed that since the 2016 election, 538 polls tend to do that now so as to not look stupid.

They didn’t look stupid in 2016. They gave Trump a better chance than almost any outlet. It was 29% by the end. Things with 29% probability happen all the time.

538 doesn't do any polling. They just aggregate the polls and make a forecast based on that.

They run an algo which only puts out what is put in. No one ever knows what gets put in.
