"That's right: Pennsylvania drivers have a one in 52 chance of hitting a deer. Overall, American drivers were less likely — one in 116 — to experience a crash involving a deer, elk, moose or caribou."

Be careful out there Pennsylvanians. I just hit this lottery last week. I'm hoping I don't get lucky again.

I swear I've had more close calls in the last few years, including one where Bambi literally stopped in front of me on the road and challenged me to a staring contest.

They’ve been really active this fall, even out here in the Philly burbs.

Any time I see a deer crossing the road I slow down, put on hazards and flash my lights for oncoming traffic to make sure I catch everyone’s attention. Even if there’s a safe gap for me to cross doesn’t mean something won’t happen shortly after so I want to help the other drivers to be looking around.

Whatever you do, please don't just throw on the high beams to blind everyone else so they hit the deer.

"Go that way. Very fast. And if you see a deer, turn."

Just a little joke for my fellow teens of the 80s.

I already bought a new grill for my Subaru this year. Though I've lived in Tioga County for 16 years and it was just the second one I hit so I am grateful. The first one slid across my hood, cracked my windshield, rolled off and ran away.

The crazy thing is between my wife and I we hit five in a ten year stretch during 90s in Fayette and Greene county. We've been lucky the last 12 years. Well our luck just ran out.

One of my biggest concerns driving to Pittsburgh at the end of November. I told my friend I want to leave early enough, before sun down. Her response being “you think there’s deer like that” 😒

FyrestarOmega t1_isxowmc wrote

Yes, but doing so also drives away the natural predators of deer and allows their population to grow unchecked. This is bad for other herbivores that compete with deer for food, bad for us in terms of dangers on our roadways and spread of disease, and bad for the deer who may encounter painful death.

Keeping balance in their population is important, as is keeping their species in healthy numbers. Hunting does serve a necessary purpose with deer, especially in developing areas.

I drive to Pennsylvania a couple times a year to visit family. I always know when I've crossed the state line when I see the first deer corpse, usually followed by a couple sprinters before I reach the old homestead.

Paying attention at all times really helps. Have never hit one, and I am ancient. Had a few pretty close calls, though.

My neighborhood in west chester usually has 6-8 deer “locals,” each year. I actually counted 18 deer on a single property last week which is my new record. Those things are multiplying yall.

If any of you have property in the greater South East or NEPA areas that needs to be hunted, I’d be happy to do my part 😏

A few years ago a guy I worked with hit a deer twice in a two week time span. I joked around with him that his insurance company was going to think that he was trying to pull some sort of scam...😂

We really need to extend deer season. The population is way out of control.

Does anyone else remember the deer whistles people used to put on their cars in the late 80s and early 90s? I know my granddad and 2 of my uncles hit deer with em on their cars/trucks.

The deer was smart. If your going to be hit by a car, your best move is to jump and roll into the windshield. Your more likely to survive with less serious injuries than if the car hits you standing.

Other related trivia...
You have an 80% chance of surviving being hit by a car traveling 35mph or lower. But if it's traveling 45 or higher when it hits you, your only 20% likely to survive. (*That's for humans, not sure about deer)

Sounds more like it’s not the deer but the transplants to Pennsylvania who aren’t accustomed to seeing deer on the road.

I’m coming from jersey, so I’m not sure the route it’s taking me to Pittsburgh yet. I have a fear of them ever since the one time I did hit one, he actually hit me.. I had no idea what I hit bc he hit over my wheel well. I got extremely lucky

Mt Lebo is a little southwest of Pittsburgh, Sewickley to the northwest.

Both are well off areas and not enough hunters, residents like to feed them too. I drive through Sewickley for work and see them in the craziest places
