Ever since I moved from PA I haven't seen anyone eat pork and sauerkraut. I was eating this weekly for dinner growing up and leftovers were used for sandwiches the next day.

As soon as I saw it there was a tiny mini panic about what month we are in, like I know the year has gone fast but surely it is not January already

In a similar vein I just made a big pot of ham (smoked pork butt) and cabbage. Also includes carrots, potatoes, apples and onions. It’s made nice and tangy with a healthy addition of apple cider vinegar. Old PA Dutch recipe handed down in my family.

Decent! Definitely check out local pierogies if you aren't already making them yourself. Pierogies Plus is our family favorite. If you're not close to Mckees rocks you can order them online or a decent number of grocers and markets carry them. This is seriously one of my favorite meals, brings back memories of Sunday dinner at grams. Well done!

After working outside PA, I was shocked to learn how many people think this is a weird meal! And our New Years Dinners traditions are unique to around here too :) kinda cool that we have our own little PA culture

I don’t think that I’ve ever had spiced cider with that meal. Hmmm I don’t really like pork like that anymore but I may have to try this. Which cider did you use? I like Browns cider.

BigDumbIdiot43 OP t1_iqystsh wrote

Idk I think it was Kauffmans. I used about 2 pints, some chopped ginger, orange zest, and cinnamon, then put in a cup of whiskey. Brought it to a rolling boil then let it simmer for about 10 minutes and drank up

This looks delicious, I'm mad at myself cause I just had pork chops just the other day with mash potatoes and forgot about the sauerkraut. But I know what I am going to plan for next week.

That takes me back! Everytime we went back up to PA to visit my grandparents we had this (minus the cider) at least once.

Now if only you had Gobs for dessert!!

I have leftover pork and sauerkraut in my fridge right now. We already ate all the potatoes.

just-kath t1_ir1cidk wrote

Cook up some noodles and add them to the leftovers to extend them and create a new meal.. ( kluski noodles work particularly well for this. Bow ties are also good for this, but personal preference etc..

What spices did you use in your cider?

2

BigDumbIdiot43 OP t1_ir1g1g8 wrote

I had said in a reply to another comment, but i used cinnamon, chopped ginger, and orange zest. I don't have a spice bag but I put them all in a coffee filter and let that steep in the cider for a few minutes. I like doing it this way so then you dont have to strain the cider.

2

freedoomed t1_ir1hiqs wrote

Nice, I should add orange peel to my recipe. I use cloves, star anise, allspice and cinnamon. I add a shot of rum when I serve. Thanks for taking the time to reply again. I didn't see your recipe when I looked.

2

BigDumbIdiot43 OP t1_ir240kv wrote

I wish I had cloves on hand or I would’ve put some in, unfortunately didn’t have any. I like whiskey in mine but yours sounds pretty delicious

hedgerow_hank t1_ir14j4n wrote

Where's the pumpkin spice? Everyone knows (dunkin told us) that fall isn't official until all our hot beverages taste of this weird chemical combination.

Sweaty-Foot7952 t1_ir1wwna wrote

Is there a recipe for this? I’m in Md and want to make it for a Pa friend

2

BigDumbIdiot43 OP t1_ir23wfh wrote

It’s pretty straightforward. Usually people make it with kielbasa but I had some nice pork chops on hand. Seasoned them with pepper, garlic, dill and thyme. Then once they were just about done put in the sauerkraut with a little water, let them cook low and slow. Then made mashed potatoes separate but there’s nothing wrong with instant. My mom would add peeled apples to the sauerkraut as they cooked since they add a nice flavor.
