Jfc 1 hour and 25 minutes without power! I really...really hope that this wasn't due to neglence or UPMC trying to go cheap on their maintenance.

Privatization of critical infrastructure and maximizing shareholder profit over everything (especially preventative maintenance)?

You know damn well that’s the reason.

Why are we paying this guy to come out and run the generator for an hour every month? It’s always worked fine. There’s never been an issue with the generator that he’s found right? It’s always worked so it’ll always work.
Fire him.

That was 100% the reason and the lawsuits won't be cheap.

Were these power outages a chance malfunction or sabotage?

Didn't they add a new wing awhile back? I could have sworn it was new when I visited a friend a few years ago.

Non-"profits" of course, still have executives and upper management that can be compensated crazy sums of money. Just putting it out there so people know.

My gf is an ICU nurse practitioner (not at UPMC) and she found this truly shocking.
Generators HAVE to work for the ER and ICU. Failure just isn't an option.

This isn’t that surprising to say the least. Over the past year or so their quality of service has dropped significantly. I’m literally considering starting my chronic treatment plan all over again at geisinger instead. It’s gotten so bad with specialists, poor billing practices, and terrible patient/doctor communication.

Only a year?
My mom refused to take us to Williamsport hospital because they sent her home with a burst appendix. We would make the drive to geisinger if we needed urgent care.
I had a friend win a very large claim against them over 10 years ago for their negligence that led to the death of her child while in labor. Completely made up my mind that I would have my children at Geisinger even though it was so much further away.

Only been having health problems that require actual regular care and maintenance for 2 years. I’m young so I’m trying to get it under control, might as well switch this early on.

Back up generators failed - this is really terrifying - I've worked in ICU in the area and the implications are dire, all EMS/Fire/Police services would be diverted, patients would have to be manually (bag squeeze) ventilated for hours - critical medication drips, surgical equipment, emergency imaging ALL affected
