Only free until you get caught. Then there's a fine and possible confiscation of camping equipment.

It's free without a permit as long as you don't stay at the same campsite for more than one night.

Yes, the above poster said "forests" so I assumed they were referring to state forests.

Gamelands are also forests and some folks know not the difference between the entities who run them if, indeed, they even are aware of which entity runs them.
