Trust me bombing by chucking stuff out of an aeroplane at around the cruise speeds of your average WW1 type is not a walk in the park.

I’ve tried flour bombing from aircraft at similar speeds - even at very low altitudes it’s not as easy as you might think to make accurate drops. And it must have been bloody terrifying when people are shooting at you and the only thing between you and them is a layer of thin highly flammable fabric :(

Oh if they were hit and not killed instantly their bosses had decided not to give them parachutes for fear that the pilots would chicken out and jump rather than keeping a stiff upper lip and augering in on fire like a decent chap :(

Sometimes they would drop hundreds of metallic darts that gained speed via gravity. They would do it over the enemy trenches. The dart would often go right through somebody; in at the head and out through the groin. Somebody would call out that it's coming and they all would cringe in absolute terror.
