Who has considered the possibility that Andy , who absolutely lived for and lived the put-on , staged his own premature, sudden , and unlikely death from lung cancer ( he was a non-smoker ) as the ultimate send-up ? He had the money to pull it off . His routines had been getting farther out there and longer lasting ( trans gender wrestling ) and less popular , and this might have been his way of retiring with an untoppable act

At one time, I would have considered that possibility. Then a good friend of mine (also a non-smoker) died of lung cancer at the age of 39.

Kaufman also worked the nightclub scene in the 70s, so he was exposed to massive amounts of secondhand smoke.

Yeah I think unless you experience it, it’s hard to understand what the smoke was like back then. Those comedy clubs aren’t well ventilated, often underground. You make a good point.

People who do not smoke do get lung cancer. Sadly.

That's why he had friends who slapped his corpse during his viewing. Had to be sure.

I thought the same for many years, since his other persona showed up after his death multiple times, but I'm not sure andy would attempt fate either just to get out of the lime light, he had a weird paranoia about him.

Yeah, but he would have come back by now.
