It is possible the body of the can was tin plated steel with an aluminum top. But cans have almost always been made of aluminum.

Aluminum cans came out in the late 60s. They were steel before that like this one. You opened them with a “ church key” as they were called

I remember being bitterly disappointed in 1975 when I couldn't take my Shasta cans in for money because they were steel, not aluminum.
