“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”

― Barry Goldwater. The politician most often credited with having sparked the resurgence of the American conservative political movement in the 1960s.

Edit to offset the heavy hand of politics. The ol' boy looks tough as nails.

I used this same quote in an r/atheist post and got ostracized for quoting a "racist" and was told to find a better source.

The left is just as indoctrinated (brainwashed) as the right and equally rabid in their blind dedication to their own side of the same control system the rich man has allowed them to choose from. Subtle nuance escapes a great many people in here. There is absolutely no common ground between left and right allowed now. None. If anyone says something about "the enemy" the other side doesn't understand they take it as an attack on their side. That and there's an extremely broad demographic on Reddit. Some of which just plain can't pick up on what's being laid down so they assume the worst and downvote.

The majority of your truly educated and smart people wouldn't be caught dead in a place like this. They simply have better things to do with their time. There's smart people on here but you're not going to see Noam Chomsky posting memes. I doubt many would get them if he did.

There was a study done that says once a comment gets a downvote chances are it will continue to be downvoted. Like when people will buy the product there's the least of on a store shelf assuming those that came before knew something they didn't and they best follow suit.

A mod somewhere said lefties dogpile with facts. Righties attack like vicious dogs. Mods just want the reports to stop. The easiest way to do that is ban the source of the reports. Right and wrong doesn't enter into it.

I went looking for stories online about how Reddit works when I first got here. Bottom line is it's a free site and you get what you pay for. Lowest common denominator rules.

Karma is a control system to keep you in line. There's no way Reddit will spend the money to accurately police a site this big.

Don't ask me for sources. You have the same internet I have and I can't be expected to remember where I found every last single thing I ever seen on the internet. (that gets me downvoted lol)

Lyndon Johnson had a nice quote about keeping African Americans to vote Democrat except he didn't use the term "African American".

That’s hilarious. Goldwater voted for the 1957 Civil Rights Act and was highly racially progressive for the time.

His stance on the ‘64 CRA was a mistake for sure as even he later admitted. But it’s plainly clear the guy was just devoted to an anti communist and economic conservative outlook to a nutty degree.

Goldwater was kind of an anomaly within the conservative big three of him, Reagan and Buckley. The guy was by all counts an honorable guy who mostly had sane assessments of the world especially by his later days.

It was really a couple nutty beliefs in his younger days that screwed him. Meanwhile, Buckley and Reagan were really just grifters.

Not only did he criticize the influence of religion within the Republican party, but he was pro-choice, which got him a ton of flak from the religious right.

Even if you're opposed to conservative ideology, Goldwater is misunderstood. He was very much more akin to a libertarian, fiscally conservative and socially liberal, than a modern day conservative.

Ask MAGGOP if this Pro Choice, Pro Freedom, Liberal Jew would pass their current test of who is a real Conservative…, you know who they are hateful bigots, who love our real enemies!

The author of Nixons Southern Strategy, and the reason we've had to deal with Reagans, Bushes, and Twimps.

Old school, yes. Cool, no.

I think you’re thinking of Bill Buckley. Goldwater was the last conservative you could respect.

Unmissed t1_jegcgo5 wrote

Not really. He spent most of his career fighting against the New Deal, and was the first Republican to run the "Southern Strategy" that Nixon later perfected.

While he was fairly egalitarian in regard to civil rights, he was overwhelmingly Libertarian. He wasn't for black people having equal rights as much as he was against the federal government making a law. The KKK endorsed him (though he, of course, denounced them)

He was very critical of Eisenhower (the actual last conservative you could respect) for being too liberal. He was also a massive war hawk, who pushed to have tactical nukes (the "small" ones) be used against the USSR (The classic "Daisy" ad was Johnson's attack on him).

In short, he was proto-Reagan. He was proto-Dubya. He is the turning point, where Republicans pivoted from being conservative to fascist.

I know and disagree with all those things. I’m glad he didn’t become president. But he’s on a different planet than Reagan and Buckley. He actually believed in his philosophy however misguided I think it is. Reagan and Buckley were just out to enrich themselves.

I wouldn’t even count Eisenhower as a conservative. He was basically a centrist.
